Albert F. Zaccone, AIA, PP, CID, Receives AIA New Jersey Distinguished Service Award

On January 11, 2020, American Institute of Architects New Jersey (AIANJ) members gathered at The Treasury at Felina in Ridgewood, NJ to celebrate the inauguration and awards presentation at their annual Gala, this year co-hosted with the AIA Architects League of Northern New Jersey (ALNNJ).

At the event, Albert F. Zaccone, AIA, was presented the award for AIA New Jersey Distinguished Service by Service Award Chairman and Past President Kurt Kalafsky, AIA, and 2020 President Steven B. Lazarus, AIA.

Mr. Zaccone is a graduate of Pratt institute and has been a practicing architect in New Jersey since 1980. Also licensed as a New Jersey planner since 1988, Zaccone was appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Architects in 2003 and is still on the board, serving numerous terms as Board President. Albert served as president of the Architects League of Northern New Jersey and as president of AIA New Jersey.

With the State Board of Architects, he serves on the Joint Architects and Engineers Committee and is the Board’s representative to the Committee of Certified Interior Designers. Serving the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), Albert is a past-chair of Region 2, which includes the Mid-Atlantic States and DC. He initiated an Educators’ Symposium for Region 2, bringing together NCARB, AIA, NAAB and its accredited schools and students for a better understanding of what the different facets of the profession do and the future direction of the profession. He has initiated a strategic plan and advocacy program to improve the direction of the board and continued outreach efforts for legislators, building officials, the public, schools and licensees in ensuring a safe built environment.

Albert’s involvement also includes working with other design professionals, where he had been Chairman for the Coalition of Design Professionals and been a judge for many years for the New Jersey Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies design awards. Professionally, Zaccone was a guest lecturer at Ramapo University, had been a contributing writer to Architecture New Jersey Magazine and an associate member of the Bergen/ Passaic Municipal Inspectors Association.

In his community, Mr Zaccone has been a municipal representative to the New Jersey State Master Plan, served on the Ridgefield Park and North Haledon Planning Boards, served on the Main Street, Ridgefield Park, Revitalization Committee, has chaired the Ridgefield Park Business Committee and Ridgefield Park Historic Preservation Commission. He has also been Vice Chairman of the Bergen County Historic Advisory Board.

Zaccone has been honored with several awards, including national recognition in the Outstanding Young Men of America publication, first prize for a black-and-white drawing in the New Jersey Mayors’ Cultural Council and the Good Citizenship Award by VFW Post 850. At the Architects League of Northern New Jersey he earned a Directors Award three times, received the Anton Vegliante Award (the League’s highest honor), the Past President’s Award and the Firm of the Year Award for the year 2000. AIA New Jersey presented him with the Architect of the Year award in 2000. His firm’s work has been published in Design New Jersey Magazine, The Record newspaper, Architecture New Jersey and Better Homes and Gardens magazines.
