The New York State Capitol has been the seat of New York State government for over a century, this magnificent building was completed in 1899 and took over 32 years to complete.

The Capitol was designed by five different architects-Thomas Fuller, Leopold Eidlitz, Henry Hobson Richardson, Frederick Law Olmstead and Isaac Perry. Many different architectural styles can be seen throughout this building-including Italian Renaissance, Gothic, Moorish, and French Renaissance.

This tour will showcase this stunning and complex example of late nineteenth century architecture, as well as explore recent restoration projects including the restoration of the three monumental staircases-the Great Western Staircase, Senate Staircase and the Assembly Staircase.

Architects often get lost daydreaming of skylines, but the world below can be equally fascinating. Join Will Hunt as he takes you on a journey through ancient underground cities, sacred caves, catacombs, tombs, and bunkers in his book “Underground: A Human History of the Worlds Beneath Our Feet.” Registrants of Breaking Ground! the AIA Tri-State Conference will have the opportunity to hear his tales come to life in his keynote address of the same name.

Make sure you attend the keynote session on Saturday, October 19, 2019 for a chance to hear the author discuss his critically acclaimed book. In a narrative spanning continents and epochs, there will be plenty to discuss. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as Will shares how he:

Tracked the origins of life with a team of NASA microbiologists a mile beneath the Black Hills;
Camped out for three days with urban explorers in the catacombs and sewers of Paris;
Descended with an aboriginal family into a 35,000-year-old mine in the Australian outback;
Glimpsed a sacred sculpture molded by paleolithic artists in the depths of a cave in the Pyrenees.
