On August 12, 2025, at Noon, AIA Pennsylvania’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx) program became a hub of forward-thinking dialogue as 100 architects from across the Pennsylvania region and beyond gathered—both virtually and in spirit—for a transformative session on artificial intelligence. The event, led by AIA New Jersey Past President Brian W. Penschow, AIA, and PA Committee Co-Chair William J. Martin, AIA, brought a spirit of collaboration and curiosity to the subject of AI’s expanding role in architectural practices.
The presentation was both timely and practical, addressing not only the promise of AI technologies but also the real-world pathways for small firms to embrace them without compromising the very creativity and human oversight that define the profession. Attendees were treated to step-by-step demonstrations that illuminated how AI can streamline zoning analysis, automate code and drawing checks, generate drawing notes, and enhance professional communication. The presenters demystified these tools, offering clear, relatable use cases and directly answering many of the questions and anxieties small firm leaders may have about integration.

Perhaps most valuable was the candid discussion around ethics and the ongoing necessity for human judgment. Penschow and Martin underscored that the adoption of AI is not a replacement for architectural expertise but rather an opportunity to amplify it. They provided a roadmap for implementation, resources to explore, and learning tailored to the needs of small firm principals, senior designers, and small firm employees.
As the conversation continues about the ethical use of AI in architecture, it’s clear that the architectural community is eager to seize the potential of AI—thoughtfully, ethically, and always with an eye toward the enduring values of the profession.
Special thanks to Lee Calisti AIA, Chair of the AIA Pennsylvania Small Firm Exchange and Susan Frear, Membership and Marketing Manager AIA Pennsylvania.
