SUMMARY:The AIA Equity in Architecture Committee is Proud to Present Breaking Barriers: Navigating Architecture as an Immigrant and Woman of Color
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: 2 minutesDescription\nAIA NJ Equity in Architecture Chair Stacey Ruhle Kliesch\, AIA\, sits down with Sameedha Mahajan\, AIA\, an architect and urban designer at HDR\, currently involved in critical infrastructure projects and aviation architecture in the USA. As a graduate of KRVIA\, India\, and Carnegie Mellon University\, Pittsburgh\, her journey as a first-generation immigrant and a woman of color in the male-dominated Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry has been both challenging and rewarding. Recently\, Sameedha was honored to receive the O-1 visa\, which is awarded to professionals for extraordinary ability in their fields. Having walked this path alone\, she is deeply committed to sharing my experiences with students and young professionals – particularly minorities and immigrants – embarking on their journeys in architecture and design. \nDuring this interesting discussion\, Ms. Mahajan will share her advice on career development strategies\, industry challenges\, and opportunities within the architecture profession. Drawing from her experience in critical infrastructure and aviation projects and her journey as a first-generation immigrant and O-1 visa recipient\, Sameedha will provide insights on navigating career transitions and fostering diversity within the field. The session will offer practical guidance and inspiration for architects seeking to broaden their career impact and support underrepresented voices in the industry. \nTopics will include: \n• Transitioning from academia to industry\n• Securing jobs and sponsorship as an immigrant student\n• Thriving in high-impact fields like aviation\, healthcare\, and sustainable design\n• Building resilience in a competitive industry \nLearning Objectives: \nBy the end of this session\, participants will be able to: \nIdentify strategies for career advancement and professional growth within the architecture industry.\nExamine pathways for navigating immigration challenges in the U.S. architectural job market.\nDiscuss the impact of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) on practice within the AEC industry.\nExplore opportunities in high-impact fields such as aviation and healthcare and their role in shaping future architectural practice.\nApply key takeaways to foster mentorship and advocacy for underrepresented groups in architecture.

DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: 2 minutesJoin AIA CNJ and AIA NJ Women in Architecture for this Virtual Presentation:  \nThe Stop Overworking Formula for Women Architects \nVIRTUAL\n1 LU (pending) \nAre you a woman in architecture who struggles with overwork\, work stress\, or even burnout? Your brain continues to spin with work-related worries even when you’re not there\, and it’s hard to take time off without guilt or to be fully present with your kids\, your partner\, or your relationships outside of work? \nAs a leader\, you take on too many tasks and struggle to say no. You’re constantly being pulled into inefficient meetings and work in the weeds\, and you worry constantly about whether it’s all enough\, if you’re good enough\, and about keeping everyone happy. \nIf you struggle with this—and even fantasize sometimes about having a boring easy job (but you know that wouldn’t satisfy you either)—this training is for you. You’ll learn the real reason why so many high-achieving women leaders get stuck in overwork and what you can do about it. You’ll learn the surprising pathway to achieving more in your career by doing less. You’ll learn how to get out of the weeds and operate at a higher level in your work so you can have more impact\, more satisfaction\, and more time and mental space to enjoy everything outside of your job in this one precious life. \nYou’ll learn: \n→ How to work less and still succeed at work (and actually accomplish more as a result) \n→ How to get out of the weeds\, be less reactive\, and be a more strategic and visionary leader in your career \n→ How to set and maintain boundaries with more joy and ease (and less drama and guilt!) \n→ How to shut off your work brain after work so you can enjoy guilt-free time off\, and be present\, energetic and joyful with your family\, your friends\, and in your life outside of work \nLearning Objectives: \n→ Participants will reduce work hours and stress while achieving more client satisfaction and profit.\n→ Participants will practice strategies to be less reactive and be a more strategic and visionary in their roles\n→ Participants will enact strategies to set and maintain boundaries between work and their personal lives\n→ Participants will create mental breaks between work and their personal lives to reduce their chances of burnout and increase their chances of creative ideation \nPresenter: \nThis course is presented by Maya Sharfi. \n \nMaya Sharfi is founder of Build Yourself\, a leadership coaching company that helps women in design and planning grow into senior leadership roles without burnout and overwhelm. \nMaya’s clients achieve results like worrying less about work after hours\, delegating more\, and also moving into senior director roles\, launching new\, innovative programs\, and even achieving salary bumps like $25k\, $40k\, and even $80k and $100k. Maya is a former Harvard Innovation Lab resident and has an MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. \nRegistration:\nWhen you register\, please include your AIA number in the Special Instructions field\, if applicable. Please contact Erin at president@aiacnj.org if you have any questions or request for special accommodations. \nZoom details will be provided via email prior to the event. \n$0.00 AIACNJ Member Ticket \n$0.00 Non-Member Ticket     \nRegister Now
