SUMMARY:AIA NJ SFx Presents Five Not So Easy Pieces: Designing Missing Middle Housing in Urban Environments
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minute1 LU/HSW \nThe AIA NJ Small Firm Exchange is dedicated to supporting and empowering small firm architects by providing valuable resources\, education\, and networking opportunities. Through engaging webinars and events\, we bring industry leaders and experts directly to the small firm community\, offering insights on design\, business strategies\, and emerging trends. Our mission is to foster innovation\, collaboration\, and professional growth\, ensuring that small firms have the tools and knowledge to thrive in an evolving architectural landscape. \nWould you like to explore the project constraints that shape Missing Middle housing typologies? In this session\, Will Teass\, AIA and Charles Warren\, AIA of Teass Warren Architects will review the design approaches for various types of Missing Middle housing. We’ll begin with attached units (NetZero RowHouse)\, move on to detached duplexes (Ballston Duplex)\, and conclude with small multi-family buildings (Le Parc)\, all designed for compact footprints. Additionally\, a case study of The Collection at R Street will demonstrate how incorporating diverse typologies within a single project can enhance an urban neighborhood. Finally\, we will share a recent competition entry\, GreenHouse—a point-access block with a single means of egress—highlighting emerging trends in Missing Middle housing design.
