SUMMARY:Progress Through Storytelling: Small Firms Winning Approvals For Innovative Design
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin AIA Central New Jersey for this virtual presentation: \nProgress Through Storytelling: Small Firms Winning Approvals for Innovative Design\nThe most creative\, promising and forward-thinking design innovation still has to win approval from preservation commissions\, planning/zoning boards\, neighborhood organizations and other stakeholders. In this session two architects\, each a practice founder and leader\, share effective communication strategies based in principles of storytelling and graphics that win approvals from decision-makers\, turning NIMBY into YIMBY. Examples and lessons learned are drawn from adaptive reuse\, expansion\, and new-build projects in localities where sensitivity to historic preservation and existing neighborhood character creates challenges for firms with limited name recognition who are championing unfamiliar approaches. \nVIRTUAL\n1 LU (pending) \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify and anticipate the concerns and objections of individuals and entities with decision-making power over approvals for adaptive reuse\, expansion and new construction projects in historic (or otherwise sensitive) cities\, towns and neighborhoods. \nEvaluate an innovative design concept to determine its assertible value for the proposed site and surrounding community\, and its sensitivity to historic and architectural context.\nStructure a narrative that draws the attention of the stakeholder audience and decision-making authorities to the proposed benefits\, and to how the project aligns with the community’s shared values\, while alleviating anticipated concerns and heading off potential objections.\nImprove their external communications efforts\, by crafting more effective presentations with constructive graphic elements that steer the audience through the narrative\, and respond authoritatively to questions and unexpected objections with sensitivity and appreciation.

SUMMARY:Designing-Women’s Lives: Transforming Place and Self
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minutePresented by Toby Israel\, Ph.D.\, Design Psychologist\nI LU Pending \n  \nLocation:  Kean University\, Michael Graves College – J-100 \nDate: December 11\, 2023 \nTime: 6 PM \nToby Israel\, Ph.D. is a founder of the new field of Design Psychology.  Defined as “the practice of architecture\, planning and interior design in which psychology is the principal design tool\,” this new discipline continues to gain international attention.  Dr. Israel has been interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning\, NPR’s Talk of the Nation and Radio Times and for The L.A. Times\, The New York Times\, The Financial Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, and Oprah Home Magazine. \nIs there a ‘woman’s way of knowing’ about the environment that’s been discounted? In her new book\, Designing-Women’s Lives: Transforming Place and Self\, Dr. Toby Israel argues that there’s a whole realm of emotional experience of place that needs to be laced back into the built world. In this session\, she suggests how female architects\, especially\, can engender a place-making revolution by using Design Psychology as the foundation for creating emotionally satisfying places. \nTo build her case\, the presenter will discuss how she took renowned female place-makers through a Design Psychology Toolbox of exercises\, a ‘deeper-than-deep dive’ methodology\, that revealed ways these ‘greats’ transformed their home spaces. By leading audience members through similar hands-on exercises\, the speaker will invite all to explore their own emotional/environmental\, lived-experience. She’ll show how to apply that ‘feeling’ experience of place to the making of ‘Transcendent Liberating Design’- – luminous and empowering environments. The talk introduces the audience to a ‘design from within’ Design Psychology Toolbox\, a unique programming process they can use to empower themselves and the clients they serve.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Small Firms\, Tough Contexts: Ensuring Delivery of Design Excellence
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteAIA-NJ Small Firm Exchange is focused on the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms. With that mission in mind\, we will be hosting continuing educational webinars that focus on the current issues facing small firms. Please join us for a continuing education webinar followed by a Small Firms Exchange Forum: \nSmall Firms\, Tough Contexts: Ensuring Delivery of Design Excellence  \n1 LU/HSW pending \nPresented by Charles F. Bloszies FAIA \n \nNovember 15th – 7:00pm-9:00pm \nFree to Attend \nWith a staff of under 10 practitioners\, small firms are challenged to take on and deliver major works in difficult contexts – tight urban sites\, historic settings\, complex technical solutions – while also striving for design excellence. Apply lessons learned over three decades by this firm in San Francisco led by an architect\, AIA Fellow\, and structural engineer\, including successfully resolved\, large-scale commissions in urban infill (1 Kearny)\, multi-building adaptive reuse (Blu Dot)\, and modern expansions of a constrained\, sensitive historic school campus (Cathedral School). The presentation will offer concrete ideas for small practices on how to position for and land these major works\, as well as what drove the design solutions – and how obstacles were addressed.\n\nContributing to understanding of small firms focused on the SFx design category\, the firm\, Office of Charles F. Bloszies FAIA\, provides insights into the successful work in relation to the size of the firm\, though with an emphasis on reaching for the best possible design outcomes in aesthetics\, sustainability\, wellness\, urbanism\, technical rigor\, and resilience and durability. \nSmall Firms Exchange Forum \nFollowing the educational event\, we will host a moderated Forum where small firms can talk about issues that they are facing in the day-to-day management of their firms and learn from their peers on how to build sustainable businesses and practices.\n\n Register today
