SUMMARY:Designing-Women’s Lives: Transforming Place and Self
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minutePresented by Toby Israel\, Ph.D.\, Design Psychologist\nI LU Pending \n  \nLocation:  Kean University\, Michael Graves College – J-100 \nDate: December 11\, 2023 \nTime: 6 PM \nToby Israel\, Ph.D. is a founder of the new field of Design Psychology.  Defined as “the practice of architecture\, planning and interior design in which psychology is the principal design tool\,” this new discipline continues to gain international attention.  Dr. Israel has been interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning\, NPR’s Talk of the Nation and Radio Times and for The L.A. Times\, The New York Times\, The Financial Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, and Oprah Home Magazine. \nIs there a ‘woman’s way of knowing’ about the environment that’s been discounted? In her new book\, Designing-Women’s Lives: Transforming Place and Self\, Dr. Toby Israel argues that there’s a whole realm of emotional experience of place that needs to be laced back into the built world. In this session\, she suggests how female architects\, especially\, can engender a place-making revolution by using Design Psychology as the foundation for creating emotionally satisfying places. \nTo build her case\, the presenter will discuss how she took renowned female place-makers through a Design Psychology Toolbox of exercises\, a ‘deeper-than-deep dive’ methodology\, that revealed ways these ‘greats’ transformed their home spaces. By leading audience members through similar hands-on exercises\, the speaker will invite all to explore their own emotional/environmental\, lived-experience. She’ll show how to apply that ‘feeling’ experience of place to the making of ‘Transcendent Liberating Design’- – luminous and empowering environments. The talk introduces the audience to a ‘design from within’ Design Psychology Toolbox\, a unique programming process they can use to empower themselves and the clients they serve.  \n  \n

Please join us for a continuing education webinar followed by a Small Firms Exchange Forum: \nSmall Firms\, Tough Contexts: Ensuring Delivery of Design Excellence  \n1 LU/HSW pending \nPresented by Charles F. Bloszies FAIA \n \nNovember 15th – 7:00pm-9:00pm \nFree to Attend \nWith a staff of under 10 practitioners\, small firms are challenged to take on and deliver major works in difficult contexts – tight urban sites\, historic settings\, complex technical solutions – while also striving for design excellence. Apply lessons learned over three decades by this firm in San Francisco led by an architect\, AIA Fellow\, and structural engineer\, including successfully resolved\, large-scale commissions in urban infill (1 Kearny)\, multi-building adaptive reuse (Blu Dot)\, and modern expansions of a constrained\, sensitive historic school campus (Cathedral School). The presentation will offer concrete ideas for small practices on how to position for and land these major works\, as well as what drove the design solutions – and how obstacles were addressed.\n\nContributing to understanding of small firms focused on the SFx design category\, the firm\, Office of Charles F. Bloszies FAIA\, provides insights into the successful work in relation to the size of the firm\, though with an emphasis on reaching for the best possible design outcomes in aesthetics\, sustainability\, wellness\, urbanism\, technical rigor\, and resilience and durability. \nSmall Firms Exchange Forum \nFollowing the educational event\, we will host a moderated Forum where small firms can talk about issues that they are facing in the day-to-day management of their firms and learn from their peers on how to build sustainable businesses and practices.\n\n Register today

How can relationships between indoors and outdoors be configured? Maitland Jones and his team at TenBerke asked these questions with their ambitious design for Princeton University’s two newest residential colleges. As a component of campus-wide growth strategies and part of Princeton’s residential college tradition\, the new colleges give architectural expression to the ongoing commitment to inclusion and belonging. TenBerke’s design creates a dialogue between architecture and landscape that builds community and is sensitive to traditional campus space-making. Mait will discuss how his team created a richness of experiences and a sense of inclusivity for students by implementing skillful siting\, massing\, and universal access.  \nDesign and Service Award Winners will be announced at the  completion of the Lecture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAIA Member \n  \n$100 \nTour\, Reception & Lecture \n  \n$75 \nReception & Lecture \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEPIC Member \n  \n$35 \nTour\, Reception & Lecture \n  \n$25 \nReception & Lecture\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNon-AIA Member \n  \n$200 \nTour\, Reception & Lecture \n  \n$150 \nReception & Lecture \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER TODAY \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you would like to sponsor or have questions about this event\, please contact \nChristina Goldstein | cgoldstein@njpsi.com

DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteDATE: Wednesday\, September 20\, 2023 \nTIME: 5 to 9 PM \nLOCATION: The Smithville Inn – 1 N. New York Rd Galloway\, NJ 08205 \nPRESENTATION: Building the Contagious Disease Hospital at Ellis Island: Hospital design\, materials\, and methods from 1900 – 1915 \nPRESENTERS: Jennifer Arnoldi\, AIA\, Senior Associate at Mills + Schnoering Architects\, LLC\, Jean Zimmerman\, Save Ellis Island \nDESCRIPTION: The expansion of Ellis Island with new hospital facilities circa 1900 brought advanced methods in medical care as well as construction techniques and materials. This lecture will unfold the planning and uses of the hospital buildings on the NJ side of the island until they were abandoned in 1954. It will also explore a brief history of iron and concrete construction\, demonstrating the progress of theoretical and applied sciences in building engineering. The Kahn system of reinforced hollow tile construction was widely used for floor/ ceiling systems throughout Ellis Island’s contagious ward buildings\, bringing benefits of fireproof\, prefabricated and sanitary construction materials. A current stabilization project in the Staff House will take a closer look at this framing system; a second project will examine ground improvement through grouting to stabilize another building. \nCREDITS: 2 HSWs \nCOST: AIA Members: $30\, Associates & Students: FREE\, Guests: $40* (cash\, check or credit taken at door.) (3.3% surcharge fee for credit) \nRSVP: Wednesday\, September 13\, 2023 \nRSVP to Phil Giambri at 609-425-5499 or pg.aiasj@gmail.com with your attendance. \n\nMembership determined by the membership roster as of the date of this meeting.\n*IA South Jersey is registered with the AIA Continuing Education System AIA/CES.\n\nThis program is for 2 HSWs which will be reported directly to the AIA/CES for AIA members. \n\nMany of our ancestors came through Ellis Island and some even stayed at the NJ end of the island at the hospital complex before they entered into America. \nAt this joint meeting\, take this opportunity to see this rare presentation by Jennifer Arnoldi\, AIA of Mills + Schnoering Architects\, LLC who is in charge of the stabilization of the south side of the island.
