SUMMARY:September Meeting: The Post-War Legacy of Carl Kemm Loven\, Phase 2
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin Architects League of Northern New Jersey on Wednesday\, September 17 at the Coronet Showroom for ALNNJ’s September meeting\, featuring Builder of Dreams\, Phase Two: The Post-War Legacy of Carl Kemm Loven’s Residential Architecture presented by Xiomara Paredes\, AIA\, and Kathleen Walter. \nAgenda \nSocial Hour: 6:00 – 7:00 PM\nDinner & Presentation: 7:00 PM \nCourse Description (1 LU Submitted) \nThis course explores the second phase of architect Carl Kemm Loven’s work\, focusing on the post–World War II period through the early 1960s. As American residential architecture shifted toward more simplified and affordable home types\, Loven responded with designs that balanced functional needs with distinctive features. Participants will learn how Loven transitioned from elaborate\, storybook-style homes to Cape Cod and split-level houses\, while still incorporating signature elements such as dovecotes\, masonry details\, and mixed materials. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of recognizing and preserving the architectural value of these homes as part of the region’s built history. \nSpeakers \nXiomara C. Paredes\, AIA\, is the Principal of Paredes-Grube Architecture in Glen Rock\, New Jersey\, and a Registered Architect in New York and New Jersey. As an undergraduate\, she earned the Bachelor of Architecture in 1979 from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. As a graduate student\, she won the Thesis Prize and earned her Master of Architecture in 1983 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \nAfter ten years of experience at two northern New Jersey firms\, Xiomara started her architectural practice in 1994 to focus on residential design. Her firm’s large portfolio demonstrates architectural solutions for older homes – including a number of original Karl Kemm Loven designs – where attention to period style and historic detail is combined with modern construction materials and technology. \nXiomara joined the Glen Rock Historical & Preservation Society in 2008 after learning about Loven in 2005 when she designed the renovation of and addition to his former home in Glen Rock. In 2009\, she worked with the Glen Rock Historian to preserve and archive 345 sets of Loven’s drawings donated to the GRHPS. As the Archivist for the Loven collection\, Xiomara continues to assist the GRHPS in locating and documenting remaining Loven homes in and around Bergen County. Her lectures aim to raise public awareness of Loven’s work with the goal of preserving these architectural gems. \nKathleen Walter earned her B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Massachusetts and completed her M.A. in American History at Montclair State University. She has lived in Glen Rock since 1996 and has taught history at Glen Rock High School since 2007\, succeeding longtime faculty member Al Deatte. \nBefore returning to the high school\, Kathleen served as HSA President at Central School and contributed to local education programs such as Colonial Day and the Tick-Tock program. She developed curriculum projects like the “Glen Rock Heroes” program\, engaging honors students in research that connects local residents’ stories to major events in American history\, including World War II\, Radio City Music Hall\, the invention of the Magic Fingers Bed\, and the Apollo missions. \nKathleen serves on the Board of Trustees of the Glen Rock Public Library and was appointed Borough Historian in 2024. Her husband\, Kevin Walter\, is active in the community as a recreation coach and president of the Glen Rock Fire Department.

Thoughtfully positioned within the limited buildable area of a 7.2-acre site—bordered by two wetland zones and two roadways—the 23\,000-sf community center was developed with a “town square” parti\, serving as a dynamic focal point for the growing Jewish community of Hunterdon County. The design takes advantage of the site’s natural slope to integrate the building into the landscape\, maintaining a low profile to address neighborhood concerns while ensuring seamless accessibility. Natural and regionally sensitive materials were selected to complement the area’s historic character while supporting durability and environmental considerations. The tour will explore how the building balances modern programmatic needs with zoning and site constraints\, incorporating thoughtful solutions for egress\, acoustics\, and flexible gathering spaces. The design fosters both individual and communal well-being\, with an emphasis on daylighting\, material choices\, and a strong connection to the surrounding environment. Attendees will be divided into two groups for a guided walkthrough of interior and exterior spaces\, including the lobby\, sanctuary\, social hall\, classrooms\, office space\, and nursery school. \nCourse Description: Business Structures as a Strategy for Firm Growth (0.5 LU) \nParticipants will gather for a Business of Architecture presentation by Joshua Zinder\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP focused on alternative firm business structures as a strategy for firm growth and future financial stability. The building’s layout follows a “town square” concept\, with a central\, light-filled lobby acting as the heart of the community. The design prioritizes connectivity to the landscape\, using the site’s slope to keep the structure low-profile and unobtrusive. The sanctuary\, oriented eastward toward Jerusalem\, features a flexible space that accommodates 150 congregants\, with natural light flooding through clerestory windows. A multipurpose “jewel box” in the lobby serves as a gathering space\, while an amphitheater offers outdoor opportunities for prayer and events. The design blends modern forms with regionally sensitive materials\, creating a dynamic and inviting space that goes beyond a synagogue to become a vibrant community hub for the growing Jewish population in Hunterdon County.

SUMMARY:AIANS Summer Happy Hour!
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteKick off the summer with AIANS at our Summer Happy Hour at Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair! Join fellow architects and industry professionals for an evening of great company and lively conversations! \nYou never know where the conversation will go at our happy hours! \nOne moment\, you might be deep in conversation about a planning board hearing\, and the next?.. \nSomeone could be explaining why deli-meat style turkey is better than regular turkey. Then you could be retorting that turkey deli meat isn’t really turkey. And then a third person could enter the conversation to say that it depends on the deli turkey brand. And a fourth person could step in to say that they dislike cheese in their turkey sandwiches. And a fifth person could say that the cheese in turkey sandwiches isn’t really cheese. And a sixth person could walk up to the conversation\, take out their phone and have everyone in the conversation pose for a picture and have them say cheese. \n2 Free drinks and bar food! \nTierney’s Tavern is known as Montclair’s home for Blues\, Rock ‘n’ Roll\, Indie\, Jazz\, and more\, but there won’t be any live music\, so please take care of your musical listening needs in the car on your way to the happy hour!

SUMMARY:Generative AI in Architecture: Enhancing Health\, Safety\, and Welfare through Smarter Design 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteThe AIA New Jersey Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Committee focuses on how emerging technologies—from BIM to digital fabrication—are transforming architecture. TAP supports innovation in design and construction by helping architects explore and adopt tools that improve efficiency\, quality\, and project outcomes. Please join us for this valuable webinar: \n1 HSW \nAs architecture embraces the digital frontier\, generative AI is redefining how architects design environments that protect public health\, ensure safety\, and promote overall wellness. This webinar will explore how AI-driven tools are transforming architectural workflows to enhance building performance\, site responsiveness\, and user-centered design. \nThrough real-world case studies and applications\, attendees will examine how generative AI enables rapid iteration and design customization—allowing professionals to test multiple outcomes that support healthier environments\, safer building practices\, and more equitable community planning. By leveraging AI’s ability to work across various media—including 2D imagery\, 3D modeling\, point cloud data\, video\, and audio—architects gain powerful means to simulate\, analyze\, and communicate decisions that directly affect occupant wellbeing and the built environment. \nParticipants will also consider the ethical and practical implications of AI use\, including its role in improving indoor environmental quality\, optimizing site usage\, and reducing design risks. This session aims to equip professionals with the knowledge to responsibly integrate AI tools to advance HSW outcomes in practice.

SUMMARY:How Should Construction Contract Approach Potential Tariffs?
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin AIA Tristate for an engaging conversation with construction attorneys and architects about how to safeguard your projects\, firm and clients against economic challenges. We’ll delve into standard contract clauses\, common law protections\, contract negotiations and project controls in a volatile environment. Our panel will offer diverse prospectives on the challenges and solutions in these areas. Tune in to discover best practices for navigating in today’s economically challenging built environments. \nTariffs are taxes levied on goods imported into the U.S.\, usually paid by the importer at the port of entry. These tariffs increase the costs of imported materials\, such as those used in construction\, potentially leading to higher project expenses. Standard construction contracts typically hold contractors responsible for any tax changes\, including tariffs\, without compensation for increased costs. Relief for tariffs is rarely included in force majeure or commercial impracticability clauses\, and while some federal contracts might allow for equitable adjustments under certain conditions\, this is not a certainty. Those in the role of Project and Contract Management should consider negotiating specific contract clauses to manage tariff-related risks effectively. \nPanel Members:\nTwo Attorneys from Offit Kurman are:\nJeff Bright | jeff.bright@offitkurman.com | Harrisburg\, PA Office\nMark Johnson | mark.johnson@offitkurman.com | Los Angeles\, CA Office\nMichael Spinelli\, JD\, AIA | mwspinelli@csfllc.com | Hauppauge\, NY Office | AIA NYS\nEric Booth\, AIA | ebooth@desmone.com | Pittsburgh\, PA | AIA PA\nChristopher Brand | cbrand@rscarchitects.com | | AIA NJ
