SUMMARY:Tour of Lambert Castle
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time:   < 1 minuteJoin Newark & Suburban\, in partnership with Preservation New Jersey\, for an exclusive tour of the recently restored Lambert Castle\, a Gilded Age landmark in the City of Paterson. \nLed by Michael Hanrahan\, FAIA\, Principal of Clarke Caton Hintz\, and James Giresi\, AIA\, Senior Associate\, the tour will examine the meticulous restoration work that has revitalized this historic structure. Hanrahan and Giresi will discuss the challenges and considerations of preserving the castle’s architectural integrity while adapting it for contemporary use. Participants will tour both the exterior and interior\, gaining a behind-the-scenes perspective on the craftsmanship\, materials\, and design decisions that shaped the restoration. \nTour Course Description (1.5 HSW Submitted) \nLambert Castle\, built in 1892 for silk manufacturer Catholina Lambert\, is a rare example of fully developed castellated residential architecture and is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Now serving as a museum\, library\, and meeting space for the Passaic County Historical Society\, the Castle is undergoing a multi-phase restoration led by Clarke Caton Hintz to address safety\, accessibility\, and long-term building performance. This guided tour will examine the restoration work from a health\, safety\, and welfare perspective. Attendees will review how exterior envelope repairs—including masonry stabilization\, mortar repointing\, and replacement of deteriorated wood windows—are preventing water intrusion\, improving energy efficiency\, and protecting interior collections. The tour will also highlight interior restoration strategies that pair historically accurate finishes with modern mechanical upgrades to enhance indoor air quality\, thermal comfort\, and climate control for sensitive artifacts. Participants will see examples of ADA integration within a historic context\, the use of emerging technologies and alternative preservation practices to increase building resilience\, and innovative funding approaches that support the continued safe use of historic public structures. The discussion will link each design decision to occupant health\, public safety\, environmental performance\, and preservation of cultural heritage. \nAbout the Speakers \nMichael Hanrahan\, FAIA\, was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2025. He specializes in numerous project types\, including historic preservation and the adaptive reuse of historic structures\, institutional work\, and sports facilities. As a member of Clarke Caton Hintz since 1996\, he has been on the design teams for several historically and architecturally significant buildings. These include the restoration of Morven\, the former governor’s mansion in Princeton; the renovation of 200 Elm Drive\, the former boilerhouse for Princeton University\, for re-use as University office space; and the restoration of the Historic Hunterdon County Courthouse and Jail. Most recently\, Michael has led the ongoing phased restoration of the Hoboken Public Library\, numerous historic preservation projects for the County of Passaic\, including Lambert Castle\, and the rehabilitation of Hinchliffe Stadium\, a National Historic Landmark. \nJames Giresi\, AIA is a Senior Associate at Clarke Caton Hintz in Trenton\, NJ. His passion for the built environment and the design process is reflected in his versatile experience\, which spans from small-scale building repairs to complex historic restorations and large urban planning projects. James brings technical precision\, a focus on efficiency\, and expertise in BIM to every project. Throughout his career\, he has played a key role in preserving historic landmarks\, balancing the preservation of a building’s original character with its adaptation to modern needs. His philosophy emphasizes that historic structures should evolve to serve the past\, present\, and future. \nOne of James’ most notable recent projects was the restoration of Belle Vista (Lambert Castle) in Paterson\, a Gilded Age mansion that had fallen into disrepair. Through meticulous research and careful attention to detail\, James and his team restored the mansion to its former grandeur\, receiving acclaim for their work on restoring period-specific elements such as ornate moldings\, stained glass\, and plasterwork. \nIn addition to his architectural work\, James is a Board Member of Preservation New Jersey and an advocate for preservation across the state. He is also an experienced grant writer\, helping clients secure funding and raise awareness for endangered historical sites.

Lowry\, AIA\, NCARB is the founder of Courtney Lowry Architect\, a full-service residential architecture firm based in Sayreville\, NJ. Since launching the firm in 2017\, Courtney has built a reputation for thoughtful\, space-efficient\, and budget-conscious designs that reflect both technical expertise and creative vision. \nA long-standing member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)\, Courtney currently serves as Secretary of the AIA Central New Jersey Board. Alec’s passion for the culinary arts was sparked by his upbringing in a large Italian family where the kitchen was the heart of the home. Through travel\, Alec realized the power of food to bring people together across all cultures and backgrounds. These findings include the relationship of architecture to mental health\, the impact of light on well-being\, how spatial arrangements affect social dynamics\, the psychology of color\, and biophilic design. These topics will be addressed within the framework of how\, through the implementation and development of specific skills\, one becomes an architect\, described and illustrated by the author. \nSpeaker \nPhilip S. Kennedy-Grant\, FAIA is an architect\, artist\, writer\, and musician. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point\, New York\, and served in the Army Corps of Engineers. He earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture. \nMr. Kennedy-Grant is former Chairman of the Editorial Board of Architecture New Jersey magazine and of the Design Arts Advisory Panel for the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. He has written extensively for Architecture New Jersey\, as well as for Architectural Record\, Architecture\, and Texas Architect. He received a Fellowship for his writing and editing and an Artist in Education grant\, both from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Mr. Kennedy-Grant is the co-author and editor of the book AIA New Jersey Guidebook: 150 Buildings and Places. \nMr. Kennedy-Grant has been honored for the design excellence of his work since the inception of his practice for projects ranging from residences to renovations of historic structures. \nAn accomplished artist\, Mr. Kennedy-Grant’s watercolor and ink sketches of Paris have been exhibited at the Alliance Française in Washington\, D.C. His travel sketches have been published in Arcade and Places magazines. He exhibits his paintings frequently and has had several one-man shows of his art. As a member of the Board of Trustees of The Center for Contemporary Art\, he initiated and conducted the international competition and exhibit “Art in Architecture” in 2010.

The regulations that govern the practice of architecture require some familiarity with land use. This seminar will discuss the difference and interplay between construction permits\, zoning permits\, site plan approval\, subdivision approval and variance approval\, as well as some of the proofs that need to be shown for use and bulk variance approval. This seminar will also discuss the scope of what type of plans can\, per the applicable New Jersey regulations\, be created by an architect with respect to a land use application. Mr. Purcell has also lectured and written widely on areas related to telecommunications\, public rights-of-way\, land use and municipal law. He serves as a trustee of the New Jersey Institute of Local Government Attorneys and as an editor of the New Jersey Local Government Law Review. Mr. Purcell is also an editor of the Land Use Citator\, a yearly compilation of land use decisions published by the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education. He also formerly served as a Director of the New Jersey State Bar Association Land Use Law Section. Mr. Purcell is 2nd Vice President of the Somerset County Bar Association\, serves as co-chair of the SCBA’s Land Use Section and coordinates its annual land use symposium. As American residential architecture shifted toward more simplified and affordable home types\, Loven responded with designs that balanced functional needs with distinctive features. Participants will learn how Loven transitioned from elaborate\, storybook-style homes to Cape Cod and split-level houses\, while still incorporating signature elements such as dovecotes\, masonry details\, and mixed materials. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of recognizing and preserving the architectural value of these homes as part of the region’s built history. \nSpeakers \nXiomara C. Paredes\, AIA\, is the Principal of Paredes-Grube Architecture in Glen Rock\, New Jersey\, and a Registered Architect in New York and New Jersey. As an undergraduate\, she earned the Bachelor of Architecture in 1979 from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. As a graduate student\, she won the Thesis Prize and earned her Master of Architecture in 1983 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \nAfter ten years of experience at two northern New Jersey firms\, Xiomara started her architectural practice in 1994 to focus on residential design. Her firm’s large portfolio demonstrates architectural solutions for older homes – including a number of original Karl Kemm Loven designs – where attention to period style and historic detail is combined with modern construction materials and technology. \nXiomara joined the Glen Rock Historical & Preservation Society in 2008 after learning about Loven in 2005 when she designed the renovation of and addition to his former home in Glen Rock. In 2009\, she worked with the Glen Rock Historian to preserve and archive 345 sets of Loven’s drawings donated to the GRHPS. As the Archivist for the Loven collection\, Xiomara continues to assist the GRHPS in locating and documenting remaining Loven homes in and around Bergen County. Her lectures aim to raise public awareness of Loven’s work with the goal of preserving these architectural gems. \nKathleen Walter earned her B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Massachusetts and completed her M.A. in American History at Montclair State University. She has lived in Glen Rock since 1996 and has taught history at Glen Rock High School since 2007\, succeeding longtime faculty member Al Deatte. \nBefore returning to the high school\, Kathleen served as HSA President at Central School and contributed to local education programs such as Colonial Day and the Tick-Tock program. She developed curriculum projects like the “Glen Rock Heroes” program\, engaging honors students in research that connects local residents’ stories to major events in American history\, including World War II\, Radio City Music Hall\, the invention of the Magic Fingers Bed\, and the Apollo missions. \nKathleen serves on the Board of Trustees of the Glen Rock Public Library and was appointed Borough Historian in 2024. Her husband\, Kevin Walter\, is active in the community as a recreation coach and president of the Glen Rock Fire Department.

The design prioritizes accessibility\, natural materials\, and environmental sensitivity while balancing modern programmatic needs with zoning constraints. \nThe tour will explore key spaces\, including the lobby\, sanctuary\, social hall\, classrooms\, offices\, and nursery school. Following the walkthrough\, Joshua Zinder\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP\, will present on alternative firm business structures\, highlighting a Firm Within A Firm Strategy as implemented at his firm. \nTour Course Description: Tour (1 HSW) \nJoin us for a guided tour of the Telyas Chabad Jewish Center in Clinton\, NJ\, recipient of a 2024 Faith & Form Award and an AIA Central NJ 2024 Design Award. Thoughtfully positioned within the limited buildable area of a 7.2-acre site—bordered by two wetland zones and two roadways—the 23\,000-sf community center was developed with a “town square” parti\, serving as a dynamic focal point for the growing Jewish community of Hunterdon County. The design takes advantage of the site’s natural slope to integrate the building into the landscape\, maintaining a low profile to address neighborhood concerns while ensuring seamless accessibility. Natural and regionally sensitive materials were selected to complement the area’s historic character while supporting durability and environmental considerations. The tour will explore how the building balances modern programmatic needs with zoning and site constraints\, incorporating thoughtful solutions for egress\, acoustics\, and flexible gathering spaces. The design fosters both individual and communal well-being\, with an emphasis on daylighting\, material choices\, and a strong connection to the surrounding environment. Attendees will be divided into two groups for a guided walkthrough of interior and exterior spaces\, including the lobby\, sanctuary\, social hall\, classrooms\, office space\, and nursery school. \nCourse Description: Business Structures as a Strategy for Firm Growth (0.5 LU) \nParticipants will gather for a Business of Architecture presentation by Joshua Zinder\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP focused on alternative firm business structures as a strategy for firm growth and future financial stability.
