SUMMARY:Tour of Lambert Castle
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin Newark & Suburban\, in partnership with Preservation New Jersey\, for an exclusive tour of the recently restored Lambert Castle\, a Gilded Age landmark in the City of Paterson. \nLed by Michael Hanrahan\, FAIA\, Principal of Clarke Caton Hintz\, and James Giresi\, AIA\, Senior Associate\, the tour will examine the meticulous restoration work that has revitalized this historic structure. Hanrahan and Giresi will discuss the challenges and considerations of preserving the castle’s architectural integrity while adapting it for contemporary use. Participants will tour both the exterior and interior\, gaining a behind-the-scenes perspective on the craftsmanship\, materials\, and design decisions that shaped the restoration. \nTour Course Description (1.5 HSW Submitted) \nLambert Castle\, built in 1892 for silk manufacturer Catholina Lambert\, is a rare example of fully developed castellated residential architecture and is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Now serving as a museum\, library\, and meeting space for the Passaic County Historical Society\, the Castle is undergoing a multi-phase restoration led by Clarke Caton Hintz to address safety\, accessibility\, and long-term building performance. This guided tour will examine the restoration work from a health\, safety\, and welfare perspective. Attendees will review how exterior envelope repairs—including masonry stabilization\, mortar repointing\, and replacement of deteriorated wood windows—are preventing water intrusion\, improving energy efficiency\, and protecting interior collections. The tour will also highlight interior restoration strategies that pair historically accurate finishes with modern mechanical upgrades to enhance indoor air quality\, thermal comfort\, and climate control for sensitive artifacts. Participants will see examples of ADA integration within a historic context\, the use of emerging technologies and alternative preservation practices to increase building resilience\, and innovative funding approaches that support the continued safe use of historic public structures. The discussion will link each design decision to occupant health\, public safety\, environmental performance\, and preservation of cultural heritage. \nAbout the Speakers \nMichael Hanrahan\, FAIA\, was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2025. He specializes in numerous project types\, including historic preservation and the adaptive reuse of historic structures\, institutional work\, and sports facilities. As a member of Clarke Caton Hintz since 1996\, he has been on the design teams for several historically and architecturally significant buildings. These include the restoration of Morven\, the former governor’s mansion in Princeton; the renovation of 200 Elm Drive\, the former boilerhouse for Princeton University\, for re-use as University office space; and the restoration of the Historic Hunterdon County Courthouse and Jail. Most recently\, Michael has led the ongoing phased restoration of the Hoboken Public Library\, numerous historic preservation projects for the County of Passaic\, including Lambert Castle\, and the rehabilitation of Hinchliffe Stadium\, a National Historic Landmark. \nJames Giresi\, AIA is a Senior Associate at Clarke Caton Hintz in Trenton\, NJ. His passion for the built environment and the design process is reflected in his versatile experience\, which spans from small-scale building repairs to complex historic restorations and large urban planning projects. James brings technical precision\, a focus on efficiency\, and expertise in BIM to every project. Throughout his career\, he has played a key role in preserving historic landmarks\, balancing the preservation of a building’s original character with its adaptation to modern needs. His philosophy emphasizes that historic structures should evolve to serve the past\, present\, and future. \nOne of James’ most notable recent projects was the restoration of Belle Vista (Lambert Castle) in Paterson\, a Gilded Age mansion that had fallen into disrepair. Through meticulous research and careful attention to detail\, James and his team restored the mansion to its former grandeur\, receiving acclaim for their work on restoring period-specific elements such as ornate moldings\, stained glass\, and plasterwork. \nIn addition to his architectural work\, James is a Board Member of Preservation New Jersey and an advocate for preservation across the state. He is also an experienced grant writer\, helping clients secure funding and raise awareness for endangered historical sites.

DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin Central New Jersey for an evening of thought-provoking conversation\, elegant food and drink\, and professional development at the spacious\, beautifully appointed showroom of Mrs. G Appliances! \nThe Kitchen as a Reflection of Human Need & Meaning: A Roundtable Discussion \nAbout the Roundtable (1.5 HSW) \nIn all its forms\, the kitchen is a physical expression of our most essential needs—offering nourishment\, comfort\, and a sense of place. Framed through the lens of the Vitruvian triad—firmitas (solidity)\, utilitas (usefulness)\, and venustas (beauty)—this discussion invites participants to consider the kitchen as a space where design and daily life meet in deeply meaningful ways. \nWe’ll explore how thoughtful choices in layout\, materials\, lighting\, ventilation\, and circulation can create environments that are not only functional and beautiful\, but also support overall well-being and emotional connection. \nTopics will include: \nAir quality and environmental health\nInclusive and intuitive layouts\nSpatial relationships and circulation\nThe role of beauty and emotional resonance \nThe Panel \nBen Walmer\, AIA\,\nRoundtable Moderator\nTreasurer\, AIA CNJ\, Founder\, Broadloom\, Founder\, Highlands Dinner Club \nOriginally from Gettysburg PA\, architect and chef\, Ben Walmer\, comes from a family of five generations of fruit growers. It is from this agrarian background that he traces his connections to food and design and the motivation to launch Highlands Dinner Club (HDC) in New York City in 2009. Ben currently lives in central New Jersey and is founding architect and creative director of the NJ/NYC-based interdisciplinary design practice\, Broadloom\, whose diverse capabilities include design strategy\, hospitality design\, regenerative food systems design and agricultural master planning. HDC is a mobile social and culinary laboratory produced by Broadloom and collaboratively executed by a rotating cast of chefs\, farmers\, designers and artists. Wielding spontaneous spirit and exceptional local ingredients\, HDC has created farm-to-table experiences across three continents and seen time and again the connections and joy that come when people gather at the table to share a meal. FOOD MAKES FRIENDS. \nCourtney Rombough\, AIA\nPanelist\nOwner\, Rombough Architecture\nLicensed Architect specializing in Remodels and Additions of old homes \nCourtney Rombough is a licensed architect in New Jersey with a deep connection to her hometown of Montclair. Unlike firms that stop at permit sets\, Ric remains deeply involved in every detail to ensure design aligns with performance\, budget\, and execution. \nWith past experience managing complex government and commercial projects\, Ric now channels that technical rigor into custom homes built for real-world resilience. \nCourtney L. Lowry\, AIA\, NCARB\nPanelist\nSecretary\, AIA CNJ\, Founder\, Courtney Lowry Architect \nCourtney L. Lowry\, AIA\, NCARB is the founder of Courtney Lowry Architect\, a full-service residential architecture firm based in Sayreville\, NJ. Alec’s passion for the culinary arts was sparked by his upbringing in a large Italian family where the kitchen was the heart of the home. Through travel\, Alec realized the power of food to bring people together across all cultures and backgrounds. It became clear that eating is a cultural and agricultural act which informs people’s relationship to the land. After working in kitchens in his early career\, Alec shifted his focus to agriculture. He co-found Cooperative 518 and Cherry Valley Cooperative in the Princeton\, NJ\, with a focus on using Regenerative Agriculture as a means of caring for land & community. Both farms boasted a large CSA and supplied local restaurants while hosting community events.\nIn 2019\, Alec joined Ironbound Farm to design an agroforestry & Silvopasture system\, integrating produce and livestock into the farm’s apple orchard. Eventually\, Alec’s role evolved into overseeing the culinary program at Ironbound as Executive Chef. In the kitchen\, Alec designs his menus around the seasons\, with all of the ingredients sourced from the farm and direct from local partners. Food is cooked over the Motherfire\, a 30-foot tall Argentinian-inspired open fire cooking hearth that stands at the heart of Ironbound Farm. \nThank you to Platinum Sponsor Mrs. G Appliances for hosting this event!

SUMMARY:September Meeting: The Post-War Legacy of Carl Kemm Loven\, Phase 2
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin Architects League of Northern New Jersey on Wednesday\, September 17 at the Coronet Showroom for ALNNJ’s September meeting\, featuring Builder of Dreams\, Phase Two: The Post-War Legacy of Carl Kemm Loven’s Residential Architecture presented by Xiomara Paredes\, AIA\, and Kathleen Walter. \nAgenda \nSocial Hour: 6:00 – 7:00 PM\nDinner & Presentation: 7:00 PM \nCourse Description (1 LU Submitted) \nThis course explores the second phase of architect Carl Kemm Loven’s work\, focusing on the post–World War II period through the early 1960s. As American residential architecture shifted toward more simplified and affordable home types\, Loven responded with designs that balanced functional needs with distinctive features. Participants will learn how Loven transitioned from elaborate\, storybook-style homes to Cape Cod and split-level houses\, while still incorporating signature elements such as dovecotes\, masonry details\, and mixed materials. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of recognizing and preserving the architectural value of these homes as part of the region’s built history. \nSpeakers \nXiomara C. Paredes\, AIA\, is the Principal of Paredes-Grube Architecture in Glen Rock\, New Jersey\, and a Registered Architect in New York and New Jersey. As an undergraduate\, she earned the Bachelor of Architecture in 1979 from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. As a graduate student\, she won the Thesis Prize and earned her Master of Architecture in 1983 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \nAfter ten years of experience at two northern New Jersey firms\, Xiomara started her architectural practice in 1994 to focus on residential design. Her firm’s large portfolio demonstrates architectural solutions for older homes – including a number of original Karl Kemm Loven designs – where attention to period style and historic detail is combined with modern construction materials and technology. \nXiomara joined the Glen Rock Historical & Preservation Society in 2008 after learning about Loven in 2005 when she designed the renovation of and addition to his former home in Glen Rock. In 2009\, she worked with the Glen Rock Historian to preserve and archive 345 sets of Loven’s drawings donated to the GRHPS. As the Archivist for the Loven collection\, Xiomara continues to assist the GRHPS in locating and documenting remaining Loven homes in and around Bergen County. Her lectures aim to raise public awareness of Loven’s work with the goal of preserving these architectural gems. \nKathleen Walter earned her B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Massachusetts and completed her M.A. in American History at Montclair State University. She has lived in Glen Rock since 1996 and has taught history at Glen Rock High School since 2007\, succeeding longtime faculty member Al Deatte. \nBefore returning to the high school\, Kathleen served as HSA President at Central School and contributed to local education programs such as Colonial Day and the Tick-Tock program. She developed curriculum projects like the “Glen Rock Heroes” program\, engaging honors students in research that connects local residents’ stories to major events in American history\, including World War II\, Radio City Music Hall\, the invention of the Magic Fingers Bed\, and the Apollo missions. \nKathleen serves on the Board of Trustees of the Glen Rock Public Library and was appointed Borough Historian in 2024. Her husband\, Kevin Walter\, is active in the community as a recreation coach and president of the Glen Rock Fire Department.

Thoughtfully positioned within the limited buildable area of a 7.2-acre site—bordered by two wetland zones and two roadways—the 23\,000-sf community center was developed with a “town square” parti\, serving as a dynamic focal point for the growing Jewish community of Hunterdon County. The design takes advantage of the site’s natural slope to integrate the building into the landscape\, maintaining a low profile to address neighborhood concerns while ensuring seamless accessibility. Natural and regionally sensitive materials were selected to complement the area’s historic character while supporting durability and environmental considerations. The tour will explore how the building balances modern programmatic needs with zoning and site constraints\, incorporating thoughtful solutions for egress\, acoustics\, and flexible gathering spaces. The design fosters both individual and communal well-being\, with an emphasis on daylighting\, material choices\, and a strong connection to the surrounding environment. Attendees will be divided into two groups for a guided walkthrough of interior and exterior spaces\, including the lobby\, sanctuary\, social hall\, classrooms\, office space\, and nursery school. \nCourse Description: Business Structures as a Strategy for Firm Growth (0.5 LU) \nParticipants will gather for a Business of Architecture presentation by Joshua Zinder\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP focused on alternative firm business structures as a strategy for firm growth and future financial stability. Specific case study will feature a Firm Within A Firm Strategy\, as established at Joshua’s firm Joshua Zinder Architecture + Design\, LLC d/b/a Landau Zinder Architecture – the design firm responsible for the Telyas Chabad Jewish Center. \nGuest Speakers \nJoshua Zinder\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP BD+C \nJoshua has over 30 years of experience\, focusing on service to the profession\, community\, and his faith. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University. He is the Founder and Managing Partner of two Princeton-based firms—Joshua Zinder Architecture + Design and Landau|Zinder Architecture—where he leads projects that blend traditional materials with thoughtful design. His work spans hospitality\, cultural\, educational\, religious\, and government spaces\, as well as private homes and mixed-use developments. \nJoshua is passionate about community\, exemplified by Sukkah Village in Princeton\, which raised over $40\,000 for nonprofits. He serves on the Executive Board for the AIA National Small Firm Exchange and has presented at the AIA National Conferences. Locally\, he was AIA NJ President in 2021 and continues to serve on several AIA NJ committees and boards. He is also a Trustee of AIA Central New Jersey. Outside of architecture\, Joshua is active in Jewish Family and Children’s Services\, Gotham Networking\, and the Princeton Jewish Center. \nBenjamin Grace\, AIA\, NCARB \nAs a Registered Architect (State of New Jersey) overseeing all phases of the design process\, Benjamin consistently demonstrates intelligence and acumen in his management of diverse project types for higher education\, hospitality\, retail\, commercial\, well-being/fitness and multi-family residential projects. He recently served as the Project Manager for the Telyas Chabad Jewish Center\, the 3-acre Venetian Hotel Pool Deck in Las Vegas\, and multiple projects for Princeton University including a new Data Visualization Lab and the renovation of historic Prospect Avenue faculty townhouses. Prior to joining the JZA+D team in 2013\, Benjamin worked at William Starck Architects in Massachusetts. \nThe 23\,000-sf Chabad Center is thoughtfully designed on a 7.2-acre site\, carefully integrating with its natural surroundings while responding to community needs. The building’s layout follows a “town square” concept\, with a central\, light-filled lobby acting as the heart of the community. The design prioritizes connectivity to the landscape\, using the site’s slope to keep the structure low-profile and unobtrusive. The sanctuary\, oriented eastward toward Jerusalem\, features a flexible space that accommodates 150 congregants\, with natural light flooding through clerestory windows. A multipurpose “jewel box” in the lobby serves as a gathering space\, while an amphitheater offers outdoor opportunities for prayer and events. The design blends modern forms with regionally sensitive materials\, creating a dynamic and inviting space that goes beyond a synagogue to become a vibrant community hub for the growing Jewish population in Hunterdon County.
