SUMMARY:2022 AIANJ Fellowship Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteDear AIA Members: \nAgain\, this year the AIANJ Fellowship Committee will conduct an online seminar on Submitting for Fellowship. The seminar is scheduled for Wednesday April 6\, 2022\, from 5:00-6:30 PM. It is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Fellowship process. \nAdvancement to the AIA College of Fellows recognizes achievement in design\, preservation\, practice\, education\, literature and service. It honors architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Approximately 3% of AIA members have achieved this honor\, which is the highest award given to individuals other than the Gold Medal. To be eligible\, you must have completed ten cumulative years as an AIA member in good standing by the October deadline. \nThe nomination and application process requires significant effort\, and our AIANJ Fellowship Committee has volunteered to provide advice and guidance. The online application opens in June and closes in October (dates to be announced). However\, if you’re interested in applying\, you should start planning now. \nThe Seminar will focus on the FELLOWSHIP PROCESS\, including selecting an OBJECT\, choosing your SPONSOR\, NOMINATION and SUBMISSION. The presentation will also include a checklist of SUPPORT that the Committee can provide to candidates. \nAfter we introduce the topic\, Karen Nichols\, FAIA\, a former member and chair of the Jury of Fellows\, will present the AIA’s Submitting for Fellowship program. Bob Cozzarelli\, FAIA\, Verity Frizzell\, FAIA \, Pamela Rew\, FAIA\, and I will be on hand to describe how our Committee can help you. A Q&A period will follow. Interested candidates should also visit the AIA Honors and Awards website. \nIf you are interested in attending the online seminar\, please email Laura Slomka at lslomka@njpsi.com. \n  \nThank you\,\nEdward N. Rothe\, FAIA\nChairperson\nAIANJ Fellowship Committee

SUMMARY:Jobsite Masonry Troubleshooting (1LU|HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteInstallation and safety are essential in any industry and everyone on the jobsite. Everybody from mason contractor crew to the general contractor supervision has eyes on the job. Understanding the methods used and challenges that occur on a jobsite during the construction of a building are critical to avoid a hazardous and unsightly looking project. \nJoin industry experts from Oldcastle APG & Echelon Masonry as we will look at how proper and improper installation techniques contrast in the quality of finished product along with the safety and long-term health of a masonry building. \nApproved for 1.0 HSW/LU’s\nParticipants must be preregistered to receive credit for this webinar.

SUMMARY:Live Energy Analysis: Aligning Budgets with Energy Conservation Goals
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteIdentifying energy efficiency strategies while balancing real-world constraints such as budget can be challenging when designing a building. Take part in this interactive course that demonstrates how energy-efficiency goals—when addressed beginning early in design—can be successfully achieved\, saving valuable resources such as design-time and client budgets. The session begins with an overview of comparative analysis towards achieving energy conservation goals alongside factors that drive energy use. A real case study forming the basis of the charrette will be presented\, including an overview of conservation strategies available for consideration. Participants will utilize live polling to assemble “bundles” of selected energy efficiency measures to play out what-if scenarios. Facilitators will run real-time energy modeling simulations to show the results of bundled measures and discuss the merits and challenges of each. Charrette results will be revealed alongside energy-savings trends\, dispelling common misconceptions about the link between budget and energy savings. Actual energy performance of the case study building will be reviewed. \nRegister Here \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES:\n\nRecognize the value early energy analysis provides to the design process and client decision-making\nIdentify a range of energy-efficiency options and their impacts on energy outcomes during various stages of design\nInterpret building performance and financial information provided by energy analysis results\nUnderstand how decisions made early in design can increase energy savings opportunities\n\nPRESENTERS:\nKatie Irwin has been a project manager with Willdan for over a year. Katie works with design teams\, building owners\, and utilities to optimize building performance through detailed energy modeling and comparative analysis for commercial new construction projects. Katie received her Bachelor of Arts\, Architecture and minor in Environmental Design from the University of Minnesota. She is a current allied member of the AIA Potomac Valley and AIA Baltimore chapters. \nJenny Propst is an Energy Specialist with Willdan and a graduate from Appalachian State University majoring in Building Science with concentration in Architecture\, along with a minor in Community and Regional Planning. Jenny has 10 years’ experience in the building industry with exposure to solar photovoltaics\, residential and commercial building energy modeling and green certification. \nVincent Mazzella is a Project Manager with Willdan who works with design teams and building owners to reduce overall building energy consumption through detailed energy modeling and comparative analysis during design. Vincent received his B.S. degree from Fordham University in Engineering Physics. He has four years of experience in energy efficiency project management implementing PV systems\, LED lighting\, and efficient HVAC systems. \n

SUMMARY:Masonry QC (1LU | HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteBuilding codes for masonry\, as for all types of construction\, establish minimum requirements to assure public safety. Because contemporary masonry construction continues to evolve it is increasingly important to have a Masonry QA/QC Program to ensure the owner\, designer and contractor have their expectations met on the installation of masonry on their project. \nIn this session\, experts from Echelon Masonry & Oldcastle APG will explain the import role of an outlined\, fully implemented\, CMU QA/QC program plays in insuring a safe and functional work/living environment inside a masonry structure. \nApproved for 1.0 HSW/LU’s\nParticipants must be preregistered to receive credit for this webinar.\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Masonry Specification (1LU | HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteMasonry project specifications can be intricate and complex\, especially for masonry contractors\, often requiring a high level of attention to detail and subjective interpretation. The format of project specifications follows the same format set forth by the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) and is broken down into three parts. These include General\, Products (materials)\, and Construction. \nThis course will review the different specification types used in the CSI Specification process and how each ties into and support the other\, and the importance of proper specification processing for all phases of Masonry Construction from manufacturing through installation and cleaning. \nApproved for 1.0 HSW/LU’s\nParticipants must be preregistered to receive credit for this webinar.

SUMMARY:Climate Change Responsive Architecture – Rethinking the way we design our homes & buildings
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minute\n\n\n\nPeter Pfeiffer\, AIA Fellow\, Award winning architect\, Principle Barley/Pfeiffer Architecture \nDecember 15th at 5-7 pm – 2HSW \nClimate change is making our environment hotter and less comfortable. We are air-conditioning our homes and offices much more than just 10 years ago\, to say nothing of a generation ago. This should be reflected in how we design and build our homes and buildings. Why is today’s technology-based “LEED” Green Building program a far cry from the original ideals and aspirations of the “Green” movement? What’s more real and realistic?
