SUMMARY:AIA South Jersey's Membership Meeting with Carl Elefante\, FAIA
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteAIA South Jersey’s Membership Meeting with Carl Elefante\, FAIA\n \nDESCRIPTION: On February 17\, 2021\, the demolition of Trump Tower and Casino in Atlantic City was in the news. But\, what didn’t receive much discussion was the idea that this building implosion provided a dramatic example of our culture’s rush to demolish potentially adaptable and re-usable buildings without sufficient consideration of environmental impacts\, particularly global warming. Admirable attention paid to energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions from occupying buildings is not fully matched in our profession with an awareness of corresponding embodied emissions from the manufacture or building components and materials and construction which frequently amounts to more than two decades of operational emissions. In response\, this program will explore the importance of climate change factors in design focusing particularly on adapting buildings. The presentation will provide background on how climate change has emerged as a driver in the design and adaptation of buildings and the essential considerations in addressing the decarbonization of buildings\, cities\, and the building industry. It is also crucial to tie this enormous undertaking in addressing many other important social\, economic\, and environmental problems. \nCREDITS: 2 1-Us\nCOST: FREE.
