SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: "VAULTS BEDS GARDENS: Public Hedonics and Alternative Publicness"
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minute02.04.19 TO 03.15.19\nVAULTS BEDS GARDENS: Public Hedonics and Alternative Publicness presents amid.cero9’s investigations on the role of architecture in the formation of the contemporary public realm. Through large format drawings and precious models recreating the working environment of their studio in Madrid\, the exhibition presents architectural projects ranging from the beginning of their practice in 1998 to their most recent work. \nAmidst the ruins of Western public space and the growing contemporary collective anesthesia\, amid.cero9’s projects propose\, in a playful and subversive way\, a series of public artifacts whose ambition is to shape\, through architecture\, the place and the nature of human interactions\, reformulating what public space can be nowadays. Communal beds\, processions of portable gardens\, vaults covering public interiors\, gardens that recreate the concept of third natures\, assemblages of machines for public demolition processes\, outdoor gardens as communal houses\, spaces for interaction with digital art or infra-light domes that celebrate the counter-routine are some of the subjects that the exhibition presents with a festal and positive commitment and intellectual ambition\, reflecting amid.cero9’s aim to reconnect the practice of architecture with the complexity\, richness\, and overabundance of reality. \nIn VAULTS BEDS GARDENS: Public Hedonics and Alternative Publicness\, amid.cero9 proposes an array of catalysts for alternative forms of publicness. The interiorization of public space\, the displacements from the domestic sphere to the public\, complex environments based on interaction with other species\, the reinvention of public rituals\, or the rediscovery of intimacy and pleasure in public try to respond and counteract the current banalization\, commercialization\, and forms of control of public space. \nThis collection of structural forms\, contemporary rituals\, immersive spaces\, and gardens as collective constructs explains amid.cero9’s interest in the architectural project as a form of knowledge and discovery. The projects presented aim to propose alternative forms of beauty that would trigger new forms of affiliation and affection among individuals: an attempt to reformulate a new public sphere through architecture where physical interaction and the construction of the realm of collective beliefs\, affections\, and hopes can still happen. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Domestic\, Houses & Landscapes. Selections from the work of Catherine Opie
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteThis exhibition at Princeton School of Architecture brings together two of Catherine Opie’s series of photographs\, Domestic and Houses and Landscapes\, in order to tease out the ways in which personal identity is constructed through the spaces we inhabit as well as the façades we present to the public. For her Domestic series\, Opie traveled across the United States in an RV on a two-month road trip\, photographing lesbian couples and families in their home environments. Focused on the idea of community and how communities are formed and identified\, Opie has explained that it is the “individual …within the construct of a community” that she is examining. Conversely\, Opie explores how identity is carefully choreographed through her 8”x 10” handmade camera in Houses and Landscapes. This series documents the “regency style” façades of million-dollar estates in Beverly Hills and Bel Air with their enormous doors\, security placards\, daunting gates\, and odd architectural follies that originated in Southern California\, which later became rampant throughout America. From different points of view\, Domestic\, Houses and Landscapes considers how the personal and its appearance are intertwined and indistinguishable. \nCatherine Opie is a Los Angeles-based artist. She has received numerous awards and fellowships\, including the Citibank Private Bank Emerging Artist Award\, Washington University Freund Fellowship\, CalArts Herb Alpert Award in the Arts\, Larry Aldrich Award\, San Francisco Art Institute President’s Award for Excellence\, and United States Artist Fellowship. She has been a professor of photography at UCLA since 2001 and her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States\, Europe\, and Japan\, including a mid-career survey at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2008. Her most recent series and film The Modernist is currently on exhibit at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York until January 17\, 2019. \nLearn more

SUMMARY:The Kassler Lecture from Herman Hertzberger
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteDutch architect Herman Hertzberger graduated in 1958 from what is now the Technical University of Delft. His architectural practice\, AHH\, was established in 1960. Hertzberger’s best known designs include the Centraal Beheer head office in Apeldoorn\, Music Centre Vredenburg in Utrecht\, The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment in the Hague and the Chassé Theatre in Breda. His office is known for its many cultural buildings\, schools\, and residential buildings in the Netherlands and abroad. Hertzberger has been awarded many fellowships and received prestigious awards for individual projects as well as for his work as a whole. In 2012\, he was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Gold Medal and in 2015 he received the esteemed Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture. \nHe has lectured at the Academy of Architecture\, Amsterdam (1965-69)\, was professor at the Technical University of Delft (1970-99)\, visiting professor at the University of Geneva (Switzerland)\, and chairman of the Postgraduate Berlage Institute (1990-95). He has also presented lectures in Europe\, North America\, Central America\, South America\, the Middle East\, Asia\, and Australia. \nHertzberger’s projects have been published and exhibited all over the world. He was one of the editors of the Dutch magazine FORUM\, together with Aldo van Eyck and Jaap Bakema. Along with many magazine articles\, he wrote the books Lessons for Students in Architecture (1991)\, which has been published in twelve languages\, and Space and the Architect\, Lessons in Architecture 2 (2000). Hertzberger’s Space and Learning (2008) brings together his knowledge and ideas in a theoretical study of the spatial conditions of learning while The Schools of Herman Hertzberger (2009) presents his built and unbuilt schools\, with an essay from sociologist Abram de Swaan calling Hertzberger a pre-eminently “sociological” architect. His latest book\, Architecture and Structuralism (2015)\, attempts to formulate what structuralism means in architecture and why that matters\, given a new impulse to the discussion about sustainability and a blueprint for a more democratic architecture. \nDocumentaries on Hertzberger include Searching for Space\, a film by Kees Hin (2010)\, and The School as City from filmmakers Moniek van de Vall and Gustaaf Vos (2012). \nLecture made possible by the Kenneth Kassler Memorial Lecture Fund. The School of Architecture\, Princeton University\, is registered with the AIA Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) and is committed to developing quality learning activities in accordance with the AIA/CES criteria. \nLearn more

SUMMARY:Low-resolution Houses Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteIn conjunction with Princeton University School of Architecture’s 44 Low-resolution Houses exhibition\, curated by Michael Meredith and designed by MOS\, this multi-day international symposium expands the Low-resolution label beyond the gallery. Considering houses through the double lens of technology and representation—a desirable design object\, an image\, a stage set\, a thing\, a product both in how it is made and culturally understood—the symposium addresses three themes: Low-Res Elements\, Low-Res Tectonics\, and Low-Res Organization. \nAs our closing event for the exhibition\, the Low-resolution Houses symposium coincides with the School of Architecture’s Fall Semester theme of “Domestic” and will take place in Betts Auditorium on Thursday\, November 8th at 6:00pm with a roundtable featuring Dean Mónica Ponce de León\, Associate Professor Michael Meredith\, and Professor Stan Allen. The symposium continues on Friday\, November 9th from 10:00am to 5:00pm with selected exhibition participants including: Adamo-Faiden\, Atelier Barda\, Besler & Sons\, Bureau Spectacular\, Ensamble Studio\, First Office\, The LADG\, MAIO\, Outpost Office\, Paul Preissner\, T+E+A+M\, and Hans Tursack. \nThursday\, November 8th\n6:00pm: Introduction to Low-resolution Houses Roundtable / Dean Mónica Ponce de León\n6:10pm: Roundtable / Michael Meredith\, Stan Allen\, Dean Mónica Ponce de León \n7:30pm: Reception \nFriday\, November 9th\n10:00am: Introduction to Low-resolution Houses symposium / Dean Mónica Ponce de León \nLow-res Elements \n10:10am: Antonio Di Bacco\, Cécile Combelle\, Kevin Botchar / Atelier Barda\n10:30am: Joanna Grant / Bureau Spectacular\n10:50am: Anna Puigjaner / MAIO\n11:10am: Erin + Ian Besler / Besler & Sons \n12:00pm: Lunch \nLow-res Construction\n12:40pm: Andrew Atwood + Anna Neimark / First Office\n1:00pm: Ellie Abrons\, Adam Fure\, Thom Moran / T+E+A+M\n1:20pm: Andrew Holder / The LADG\n1:40pm: Débora Mesa / Ensamble Studio \nLow-res Organization\n2:40pm: Paul Preissner\n3:00pm: Hans Tursack\n3:20pm: Ashley Bigham + Erik Herrmann / Outpost Office\n3:50pm: Sebastián Adamo + Marcelo Faiden / Adamo-Faiden \n5:00pm: Reception \nSymposium made possible by the Jean Labatut Memorial Lectures in Architecture and Urban Planning Fund.
