SUMMARY:Domestic\, Houses & Landscapes. Selections from the work of Catherine Opie
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteThis exhibition at Princeton School of Architecture brings together two of Catherine Opie’s series of photographs\, Domestic and Houses and Landscapes\, in order to tease out the ways in which personal identity is constructed through the spaces we inhabit as well as the façades we present to the public. For her Domestic series\, Opie traveled across the United States in an RV on a two-month road trip\, photographing lesbian couples and families in their home environments. Focused on the idea of community and how communities are formed and identified\, Opie has explained that it is the “individual …within the construct of a community” that she is examining. Conversely\, Opie explores how identity is carefully choreographed through her 8”x 10” handmade camera in Houses and Landscapes. This series documents the “regency style” façades of million-dollar estates in Beverly Hills and Bel Air with their enormous doors\, security placards\, daunting gates\, and odd architectural follies that originated in Southern California\, which later became rampant throughout America. From different points of view\, Domestic\, Houses and Landscapes considers how the personal and its appearance are intertwined and indistinguishable. \nCatherine Opie is a Los Angeles-based artist. She has received numerous awards and fellowships\, including the Citibank Private Bank Emerging Artist Award\, Washington University Freund Fellowship\, CalArts Herb Alpert Award in the Arts\, Larry Aldrich Award\, San Francisco Art Institute President’s Award for Excellence\, and United States Artist Fellowship. She has been a professor of photography at UCLA since 2001 and her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States\, Europe\, and Japan\, including a mid-career survey at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2008. Her most recent series and film The Modernist is currently on exhibit at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York until January 17\, 2019. \nLearn more

SUMMARY:The Kassler Lecture from Herman Hertzberger
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteDutch architect Herman Hertzberger graduated in 1958 from what is now the Technical University of Delft. His architectural practice\, AHH\, was established in 1960. Hertzberger’s best known designs include the Centraal Beheer head office in Apeldoorn\, Music Centre Vredenburg in Utrecht\, The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment in the Hague and the Chassé Theatre in Breda. His office is known for its many cultural buildings\, schools\, and residential buildings in the Netherlands and abroad. Hertzberger has been awarded many fellowships and received prestigious awards for individual projects as well as for his work as a whole. In 2012\, he was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Gold Medal and in 2015 he received the esteemed Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture. \nHe has lectured at the Academy of Architecture\, Amsterdam (1965-69)\, was professor at the Technical University of Delft (1970-99)\, visiting professor at the University of Geneva (Switzerland)\, and chairman of the Postgraduate Berlage Institute (1990-95). He has also presented lectures in Europe\, North America\, Central America\, South America\, the Middle East\, Asia\, and Australia. \nHertzberger’s projects have been published and exhibited all over the world. He was one of the editors of the Dutch magazine FORUM\, together with Aldo van Eyck and Jaap Bakema. Along with many magazine articles\, he wrote the books Lessons for Students in Architecture (1991)\, which has been published in twelve languages\, and Space and the Architect\, Lessons in Architecture 2 (2000). Hertzberger’s Space and Learning (2008) brings together his knowledge and ideas in a theoretical study of the spatial conditions of learning while The Schools of Herman Hertzberger (2009) presents his built and unbuilt schools\, with an essay from sociologist Abram de Swaan calling Hertzberger a pre-eminently “sociological” architect. His latest book\, Architecture and Structuralism (2015)\, attempts to formulate what structuralism means in architecture and why that matters\, given a new impulse to the discussion about sustainability and a blueprint for a more democratic architecture. \nDocumentaries on Hertzberger include Searching for Space\, a film by Kees Hin (2010)\, and The School as City from filmmakers Moniek van de Vall and Gustaaf Vos (2012). \nLecture made possible by the Kenneth Kassler Memorial Lecture Fund. The School of Architecture\, Princeton University\, is registered with the AIA Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) and is committed to developing quality learning activities in accordance with the AIA/CES criteria. \nLearn more

SUMMARY:Lecture: Stan Allen
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteStan Allen is an architect working in New York and the George Dutton ’27 Professor of Architecture at Princeton University School of Architecture. From 2002 to 2012 he was Dean of Princeton University School of Architecture. \nHe holds degrees from Brown University\, The Cooper Union\, and Princeton University. His architectural firm SAA/Stan Allen Architect has realized buildings and urban projects in the United States\, South America\, and Asia. Responding to the complexity of the modern city in creative ways\, Allen has developed an extensive catalogue of innovative design strategies\, in particular looking at field theory\, landscape architecture\, and ecology as models to revitalize the practice of architecture. Parallel to this larger scale work he has recently completed a number of private houses and artists’ studios in the Hudson River Valley. Since 2008\, he has received three P/A Awards\, five AIA Awards\, the John Q. Hejduk Award from The Cooper Union\, and an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2011\, Allen was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows and in 2012 he was inducted into the National Academy of Design. In 2016 he was one of twelve architects chosen to represent the U.S. in the American Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale. His work was also featured in the 2017 Chicago Biennial\, “Make New History.” \nIn addition to numerous articles and project reviews\, his architectural work is published in Points + Lines: Diagrams and Projects for the City and his essays in Practice: Architecture\, Technique and Representation. The edited collection Landform Building: Architecture’s New Terrain was published by Lars Müller in 2011. His most recent book\, Four Projects: A Stan Allen Sourcebook\, was published in March 2017 by Ohio State University and ORO Publishers. \nLecture made possible by the Jean Labatut Memorial Lectures in Architecture and Urban Planning Fund. SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Alice Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteAlice Friedman is the Grace Slack McNeil Professor of American Art at Wellesley College and a Visiting Professor at the Modern Interiors Research Center at Kingston University\, London. Professor Friedman is the author of numerous books and articles on gender\, sexuality\, and the social history of architecture\, including House and Household in Elizabethan England: Wollaton Hall and the Willoughby Family (University of Chicago Press\, 1989)\, Women and the Making of the Modern House: A Social and Architectural History (Abrams\, 1998; Yale paperback 2007) and American Glamour and the Evolution of Modern Architecture (Yale\, 2010). Recent publications include a study of Richard Lippold’s mid-century modern sculptural installations\, and a series of articles on queer domesticities and the members of the American ex-pat lesbian circle in Paris in the period between 1920 and 1975. \nFriedman is currently working on a book titled Poker Faces/Private Spaces: Houses for Unconventional Clients\, 1907-2017. Through a series of case studies\, the book examines the ways in which architects and their most “unconventional” clients—men and women who stood apart from social norms by virtue of their sexuality or alternative ways of living—used hybrid designs and unusual planning strategies to create public facades (both literal and figurative) that shielded private enclaves behind blank walls or deceptively traditional exteriors. \nLecture made possible by the Jean Labatut Memorial Lectures in Architecture and Urban Planning Fund. The School of Architecture\, Princeton University\, is registered with the AIA Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) and is committed to developing quality learning activities in accordance with the AIA/CES criteria. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Yo Shimada
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteYo Shimada founded Tato Architects in 1997 upon graduating from Kyoto City University of Art\, where he completed a number of designs and built architecture projects at the school. \nBased in his hometown of Kobe\, Tato Architects undertakes projects throughout various locations in Japan. The projects are mainly private houses\, however\, in recent years the office has taken on assignments for interior and installation work as well. The ideology of the practice is to formulate positive outcomes through understanding the subtle conditions and constraints of everyday life\, which exist within notions of place\, culture\, and the ongoing history of architecture. These ideas have been further discussed in publications such as 7iP #04 YO SHIMADA (7inchproject\, 2012) and Everyday Design Everyday: Yo Shimada (Contemporary Architect’s Concept Series 22\, 2016). \nThe name Tato is derived from the decomposition of the kanji character “outside\,” which can be read in multiple ways. Tato Architects is interested in the process of continuous exploration in order to achieve a kind of ambiguity in its architecture\, an architecture that renews itself through the perspective of people’s everyday experiences. Furthermore\, the practice aims to create an architecture that quietly alters consciousness. \nRegister
