SUMMARY:Lecture: Stan Allen
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteStan Allen is an architect working in New York and the George Dutton ’27 Professor of Architecture at Princeton University School of Architecture. From 2002 to 2012 he was Dean of Princeton University School of Architecture. \nHe holds degrees from Brown University\, The Cooper Union\, and Princeton University. His architectural firm SAA/Stan Allen Architect has realized buildings and urban projects in the United States\, South America\, and Asia. Responding to the complexity of the modern city in creative ways\, Allen has developed an extensive catalogue of innovative design strategies\, in particular looking at field theory\, landscape architecture\, and ecology as models to revitalize the practice of architecture. Parallel to this larger scale work he has recently completed a number of private houses and artists’ studios in the Hudson River Valley. Since 2008\, he has received three P/A Awards\, five AIA Awards\, the John Q. Hejduk Award from The Cooper Union\, and an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2011\, Allen was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows and in 2012 he was inducted into the National Academy of Design. In 2016 he was one of twelve architects chosen to represent the U.S. in the American Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale. His work was also featured in the 2017 Chicago Biennial\, “Make New History.” \nIn addition to numerous articles and project reviews\, his architectural work is published in Points + Lines: Diagrams and Projects for the City and his essays in Practice: Architecture\, Technique and Representation. The edited collection Landform Building: Architecture’s New Terrain was published by Lars Müller in 2011. His most recent book\, Four Projects: A Stan Allen Sourcebook\, was published in March 2017 by Ohio State University and ORO Publishers. \nLecture made possible by the Jean Labatut Memorial Lectures in Architecture and Urban Planning Fund. The School of Architecture\, Princeton University\, is registered with the AIA Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) and is committed to developing quality learning activities in accordance with the AIA/CES criteria. \nMore information

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Alice Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteAlice Friedman is the Grace Slack McNeil Professor of American Art at Wellesley College and a Visiting Professor at the Modern Interiors Research Center at Kingston University\, London. Professor Friedman is the author of numerous books and articles on gender\, sexuality\, and the social history of architecture\, including House and Household in Elizabethan England: Wollaton Hall and the Willoughby Family (University of Chicago Press\, 1989)\, Women and the Making of the Modern House: A Social and Architectural History (Abrams\, 1998; Yale paperback 2007) and American Glamour and the Evolution of Modern Architecture (Yale\, 2010). Recent publications include a study of Richard Lippold’s mid-century modern sculptural installations\, and a series of articles on queer domesticities and the members of the American ex-pat lesbian circle in Paris in the period between 1920 and 1975. \nFriedman is currently working on a book titled Poker Faces/Private Spaces: Houses for Unconventional Clients\, 1907-2017. Through a series of case studies\, the book examines the ways in which architects and their most “unconventional” clients—men and women who stood apart from social norms by virtue of their sexuality or alternative ways of living—used hybrid designs and unusual planning strategies to create public facades (both literal and figurative) that shielded private enclaves behind blank walls or deceptively traditional exteriors. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Yo Shimada
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteYo Shimada founded Tato Architects in 1997 upon graduating from Kyoto City University of Art\, where he completed a number of designs and built architecture projects at the school. \nBased in his hometown of Kobe\, Tato Architects undertakes projects throughout various locations in Japan. The projects are mainly private houses\, however\, in recent years the office has taken on assignments for interior and installation work as well. The ideology of the practice is to formulate positive outcomes through understanding the subtle conditions and constraints of everyday life\, which exist within notions of place\, culture\, and the ongoing history of architecture. These ideas have been further discussed in publications such as 7iP #04 YO SHIMADA (7inchproject\, 2012) and Everyday Design Everyday: Yo Shimada (Contemporary Architect’s Concept Series 22\, 2016). \nThe name Tato is derived from the decomposition of the kanji character “outside\,” which can be read in multiple ways. Tato Architects is interested in the process of continuous exploration in order to achieve a kind of ambiguity in its architecture\, an architecture that renews itself through the perspective of people’s everyday experiences. Furthermore\, the practice aims to create an architecture that quietly alters consciousness. \nRegister
