SUMMARY:Liquid La Habana: Ice Cream\, Rum\, Waves\, Sweat and Spouts
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minute \nLiquid La Habana: Ice Cream\, Rum\, Waves\, Sweat and Spouts\nCurated by Beatriz Colomina\, Ivan L. Munuera\, and Bart-Jan Polman\nApril 9–May 11\, 2018 \nExhibition Opening: April 9\, 5–6pm\nPrinceton University School of Architecture \nThe Princeton University School of Architecture\, Media + Modernity Program\, Program in Latin American Studies\, and Mellon Initiative announce the opening of LIQUID LA HABANA: ICE CREAM\, RUM\, WAVES\, SWEAT AND SPOUTS curated by Beatriz Colomina\, Ivan L. Munuera\, and Bart-Jan Polman and designed by Diana Cristobal and KnitKnot Architecture. The exhibition research team includes Ingrid Brioso Rieumont\, Gillian Shaffer and Eda Yetim. Graphic design by Fru*Fru. \nArchitecture in La Habana\, Cuba is usually understood from the point of view of colonialism\, whether Spanish or North-American\, Cold War politics\, or tourist economies and ideologies. But it could also be seen as generating wholly new points of view – more fluid and less familiar. Liquid La Habana presents 5 different case studies from the late 19th century until today and challenges their common interpretations. The exhibition explores the ways in which these fluid projects of ICE CREAM\, RUM\, WAVES\, SWEAT AND SPOUTS reshuffle social contracts\, radically confronting ideas of modernity\, society\, economy\, sexuality\, privacy\, diplomacy\, aesthetics\, geopolitics\, race\, and development. \n[1] Coppelia\, the ICE CREAM parlor of 1966 that became a symbol of the new revolutionary society\, is discussed as a laboratory in which the creation of a new species\, the “Ubre Blanca\,” a super cow that would produce more milk than any cow before\, went hand in hand with international agreements and socioeconomic aspects. [2] Mies van der Rohe’s unbuilt 1957 project for a Bacardi Building in Santiago de Cuba is not presented as the work of an international architect that created a decontextualized object for promoting RUM\, but for how it was closely tied to La Habana’s existing architecture and led several afterlives around the world\, reshaping the architect. [3] The Malecón\, La Habana’s 5 mile long sea walk begun in 1901\, is an engineering work of both concrete and silicon\, a Wi-Fi spot in which the notion of public space has been redefined by electronic WAVES and the public sphere has been extended through the paquete semanal (a weekly terabyte of digital information). [4] The Tropicana Night Club is not simply a glistening stage for tourist entertainment\, but a place where the bodies in motion and SWEAT relocate the conception of political architecture in a simultaneously capitalist and socialist spectacle. [5] The National Schools of Arts deployed the sensuality of waterworks and forms\, such as the so called “vulva” SPOUT\, as a controversial architectural symbol of revolution.

SUMMARY:Brick\, Stone\, and Mortar: Their History\, Uses\, and Repair
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minute1-day workshop\nBrick\, stone and mortar construction was a common building technique throughout the colonial period.\nBy the middle of the nineteenth century\, masonry construction was almost as common as wood\nconstruction. This workshop will introduce participants to various brick and stonework building\ntraditions as well as to the varying qualities of the materials themselves. Equally important\, students will\nlook at the evolution of mortar and its basic components. There will be a demonstration of brick\npointing with a survey of the tools and techniques used. \nThis workshop is offered in partnership with the Fairmount Park Conservancy. \nInstructor: Ray Tschoepe & Tom Mcpoyle\nDates: Saturday\, Apr. 7\nTime: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.\nLocation: Arch Street Meeting House\, Philadelphia\, PA\nCost: $40\nCredits: 4 AIA LU credits \nRaymond Tschoepe is Director of Conservation for the Fairmount Park Conservancy and an adjunct faculty member of the historic preservation program of Bucks County Community College\, where he teaches a core course in building conservation. He is a contributing editor of Old House Journal\, for which he has written\, illustrated\, and photographed numerous articles. Mr. Tschoepe lectures at conferences and workshops for Traditional Building and the Association for Preserving Technology. Mr. Tschoepe graduated from the School of Fine Arts master’s program in Historic Preservation. He then worked for nearly 10 years as an independent restoration contractor. Among many preservation projects\, Ray worked toward the restoration of elements of Bellaire manor\, Letitia Street House\, Malta Boat Club and the entry doors and panels of Founder’s Hall at Girard College. \nTom Mcpoyle is a conservator for the Fairmount Park Conservancy. Recent projects as conservator include Cedar Grove exterior woodwork restoration\, Letitia House restoration\, Glen Foerd plaster medallion restoration\, Lemon Hill fanlight restoration. Before working in Fairmount Park\, he worked for four years in the preservation of historic decorative finishes for Albert Michaels Conservation in Harrisburg\, where he helped to restore buildings such as Longwood Gardens’ Ballroom and the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building.

SUMMARY:Princeton School of Architecture Post-Professional Thesis Student Exhibition: Nine Constructionists
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minute \nThe Nine Constructionists represent a new wave that thinks about architecture in relation to its physicality\, its materials and its construction. Derived from the Latin word cōnstruō—con meaning “together” and struo meaning to “pile up\, arrange; build\, erect”—the term “construction” implies an act of drawing together\, a process that occurs alongside the making of physical objects. For the architect\, construction is as much about the theory behind the spatial relationships or material decisions as it is about the act of combining materials. In the same way\, the Nine Constructionists are also concerned with the dynamic temporality of materials moving through the construction process\, and not solely with the physical process of construction making. This emphasis on the construction of architecture produces an effect of transience\, of things in the process of being built or dismantled. Like ruins\, many of these architects rely upon a temporal physicality: things don’t seem to fit together perfectly; rather\, they reveal their construction. \nThis exhibition\, curated by Samuel Clovis and Gillian Shaffer\, foregrounds a shift in the post-professional thesis at Princeton University School of Architecture from a model of individual projects to group ambitions that reflect common training\, influences and life experiences\, as a response to the contemporary moment. Both projective and discursive\, the projects on exhibit critically engage with the multifaceted condition of contemporary architecture. The exhibition comprises the works of nine emerging architects\, including architectural drawings\, models\, mock-ups\, robotics\, films and projections\, photographs\, and print media. The exhibition spans two segments\, Reconstruction and Ruination and Constructing the Domestic\, which investigate the temporal and material aspects of architecture through making use of the existing or else by making anew. Nine Constructionists seeks to spark critical inquiry and debate by inviting experts and general audiences alike to witness the new interpretations of an emerging generation of architectural thinking. \nPost-Professional thesis students Leen Katrib and Juan Salazar look to ruins and the process of rebuilding\, the new spaces formed by reconstruction and construction in different time periods. Yujun Mao\, Eda Yetim and Isidoro Michan Guindi view construction as an iterative process of autonomous form-finding\, whether informed by parametricism or palimpsests of the hand. Finally Kyle Schumann\, Kate Bilyk\, Gillian Shaffer and Samuel Clovis explore the construction of domesticity in the contemporary moment. \nHouse Number One\nKate Bilyk\nAdviser: Michael Meredith \nLoose Fit: New Standards for Code and Comfort\nSamuel Clovis\nAdviser: Axel Kilian \nAfter Regionalism: Constructing Mythos on the Appalachian Trail\nKyle Schumann\nAdviser: Paul Lewis \nHouse for an Ambassador\nGillian Shaffer\nAdvisers: Monica Ponce de Leon and Sylvia Lavin \nMuqarnas Spaces: A Constellated Organization System\nEda Yetim\nAdviser: Monica Ponce de Leon \nRubble Archive\nLeen Katrib\nAdvisers: Stan Allen and Lucia Allais \nCollective Architectural Imaging\nYujun Mao\nAdviser: Axel Kilian \nHybrid Creatures\nIsidoro Michan Guindi\nAdviser: Michael Meredith \nMisreading as a Model for Reconstruction\nJuan Salazar\nAdviser: Stan Allen
