SUMMARY:AIANS Summer Happy Hour!
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteKick off the summer with AIANS at our Summer Happy Hour at Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair! Join fellow architects and industry professionals for an evening of great company and lively conversations! \nYou never know where the conversation will go at our happy hours! \nOne moment\, you might be deep in conversation about a planning board hearing\, and the next?.. \nSomeone could be explaining why deli-meat style turkey is better than regular turkey. Then you could be retorting that turkey deli meat isn’t really turkey. And then a third person could enter the conversation to say that it depends on the deli turkey brand. And a fourth person could step in to say that they dislike cheese in their turkey sandwiches. And a fifth person could say that the cheese in turkey sandwiches isn’t really cheese. And a sixth person could walk up to the conversation\, take out their phone and have everyone in the conversation pose for a picture and have them say cheese. \n2 Free drinks and bar food! \nTierney’s Tavern is known as Montclair’s home for Blues\, Rock ‘n’ Roll\, Indie\, Jazz\, and more\, but there won’t be any live music\, so please take care of your musical listening needs in the car on your way to the happy hour!

SUMMARY:How Should Construction Contract Approach Potential Tariffs?
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin AIA Tristate for an engaging conversation with construction attorneys and architects about how to safeguard your projects\, firm and clients against economic challenges. We’ll delve into standard contract clauses\, common law protections\, contract negotiations and project controls in a volatile environment. Our panel will offer diverse prospectives on the challenges and solutions in these areas. Tune in to discover best practices for navigating in today’s economically challenging built environments. \nTariffs are taxes levied on goods imported into the U.S.\, usually paid by the importer at the port of entry. These tariffs increase the costs of imported materials\, such as those used in construction\, potentially leading to higher project expenses. Standard construction contracts typically hold contractors responsible for any tax changes\, including tariffs\, without compensation for increased costs. Relief for tariffs is rarely included in force majeure or commercial impracticability clauses\, and while some federal contracts might allow for equitable adjustments under certain conditions\, this is not a certainty. Those in the role of Project and Contract Management should consider negotiating specific contract clauses to manage tariff-related risks effectively. \nPanel Members:\nTwo Attorneys from Offit Kurman are:\nJeff Bright | jeff.bright@offitkurman.com | Harrisburg\, PA Office\nMark Johnson | mark.johnson@offitkurman.com | Los Angeles\, CA Office\nMichael Spinelli\, JD\, AIA | mwspinelli@csfllc.com | Hauppauge\, NY Office | AIA NYS\nEric Booth\, AIA | ebooth@desmone.com | Pittsburgh\, PA | AIA PA\nChristopher Brand | cbrand@rscarchitects.com | | AIA NJ

SUMMARY:Designing Sustainability: A Tour of a Custom Build and Passive House Retrofit
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin Newark & Suburban for a guided tour of two homes that illustrate how thoughtful design can achieve high performance\, comfort\, and beauty — without compromise. Architect Chris Kellogg will lead participants through his own sustainably designed home as well as a certified Passive House retrofit\, both offering real-world examples of energy-efficient\, health-conscious residential design. \nSpace is limited! \n2 LU|HSW \nCourse Description \nWhether we are building new homes or renovating old ones\, many of us agree that going forward\, we must do it sustainably. That requires not only solid\, energy efficient housing\, not only housing that supports health\, but but it must also satisfy our esthetic needs. We don’t want to do it at the expense of style\, we don’t want to live in science experiments. People take care of what delights them. The two houses on this tour illustrate that. The first\, home of architect Chris Kellogg\, whose practice focuses on green\, sustainable architecture\, shows how adaptable\, how personal\, living sustainably can be. \nWhile Kellogg built the first house from scratch\, in important ways\, the second. which he renovated and added to\, is the newer one because when he began his home\, Passive House was little known in this country. Reconstructed a decade later than his\, the owners took advantage of even more rigorous construction practices to turn a generic 1950s split level into a certified Passive House Retrofit. \nPresenter \nChriston S. Kellogg\, AIA\, is the founding principal of Steele Kellogg\, established in 2007 with a focus on sustainable design. With over 30 years of experience\, he has worked on a diverse range of projects\, including disaster assessment\, hospital campuses\, clinics\, high-rise offices\, corporate interiors\, multi-family housing\, and residential designs. Christon holds degrees from the University of Texas (MSAS)\, Harvard University (MDES)\, Boston Architectural Center (BA)\, and studied French architecture at the University of Nantes. \nChriston’s philosophy centers on the idea that sustainability and beauty must go hand in hand. He believes that for green architecture to become the norm\, it must inspire—making beauty a necessity. Drawing from nature’s efficient elegance\, Christon advocates for designs that use fewer resources to create lasting\, beautiful solutions\, while addressing the environmental challenges of our time.

SUMMARY:Integrating Spatial Computing into Architecture and Planning Practice: Augmented Reality for Inclusive Development
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin Women in Architecture for an informative webinar! \nCourse Description \nThe next era of computing will be spatial. Spatial computing merges digital and physical worlds\, extending the boundaries of computing beyond screens\, and enabling users to interact with digital information and objects as if they exist in the real world. These technologies are poised to be particularly transformative in architecture and planning\, opening up new avenues to move beyond traditional 2D drawings and static 3D models and design and experience spaces in fully immersive\, interactive environments. \nAugmented Reality (AR)\,\, allows practitioners to walk through and modify designs in real-time\, communicating a more intuitive understanding of scale\, proportion\, and spatial relationships. It is also timely – with the majority of new development now taking place within existing areas\, architects must navigate complex social landscapes\, address community concerns\, and reimagine existing fabrics. AR can function as a compelling visual language\, enabling stakeholders to “inhabit” proposed spaces before construction begins. AR can bridge the gap between abstract plans and tangible realities\, making a design more accessible to clients\, stakeholders\, and community members alike. \nIn this session with Dana Chermesh-Reshef\, CEO and Founder of inCitu – the first augmented reality platform for architects\, builders\, and developers – we will explore the potential impact of AR in architecture and planning\, and provide guidance on how to integrate this technology into existing architecture and design workflows. From creating AR-ready 3D models\, to leveraging user-friendly platforms for activation\, we’ll provide practical insights to help understand and incorporate AR into practice. We’ll also examine real-world case studies where AR has played an impactful role\, and ultimately lead to better-designed\, community-embraced projects. \nSpeaker: Dana Chermesh-Reshef\, Founder & CEO\, inCitu\nDana is an architect specialized in infill development and housing policies\, turned urban data scientist (NYU CUSP ’18). In 2020\, Dana founded inCitu: a startup on the mission to democratize city planning through augmented reality (AR). Prior to inCitu Dana worked at the New York City Department of City Planning (DCP)\, her research on the feasibility of Tel-Aviv’s city center rezoning was published in “The Marker” newspaper and she is a frequent lecturer on Smart Cities’ next frontier. \nLearning Objectives\n1. Understand the role of AR as a visualization and engagement tool in architectural practice and urban development processes.\n2. Learn how to integrate AR into existing architectural design workflows and client presentations.\n3. Understand the state of the 3D industry as it relates to architecture\, and evolving standards for real-time 3D modeling.\n4. Review successful case studies of projects where AR has been integrated into the development and public engagement process.\n5. Gain practical strategies for using AR to improve community engagement around built projects. \nREGISTER HERE: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/oXWB3cYXQLKqWiKL7YdHfg

SUMMARY:The Notre-Dame Restoration as Contemporary Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: < 1 minuteJoin Central New Jersey us on April 23\, from 6-8 PM at Seasons 52 in Bridgewater for a presentation on the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral. Dr. Lindsay Cook and Jackson DuBois will explore the impact of the 2019 fire\, addressing fire protection\, structural integrity\, and the role of modern technology in preserving historic buildings. They will also examine how traditional craftsmanship and innovative solutions are being used to rebuild Notre-Dame with both historical accuracy and modern safety standards. \nDinner + cash bar \nCourse Description (1 LU|HSW) \nIn this joint lecture\, Dr. Lindsay Cook (Department of Art History\, Penn State University) and Jackson DuBois (Executive Director\, Timber Framers Guild) will frame the Notre-Dame restoration as a work of contemporary architecture. \nThe fire that ravaged Notre-Dame in April 2019 exposed key challenges related to fire protection\, materials\, and structural integrity in historic buildings. As flames consumed the cathedral’s roof\, melting lead tiles and destroying the 19th-century spire’s timber framework\, the fire also highlighted the resilience of its stone structure. This resilience showcased the ingenuity of the original Gothic design and the craftsmanship of its builders. \nIn the wake of the fire\, the Macron administration expressed openness to adding a “contemporary architectural gesture” to the spire\, sparking an international design response. Architects and students worldwide reimagined the spire and roof system\, pushing for innovative solutions. \nHowever\, the restoration has focused on rebuilding Notre-Dame identically (à l’identique)\, a feat made possible by the combined efforts of architects\, engineers\, conservators\, materials scientists\, and tradespeople. Modern technologies have been integrated with traditional materials\, ensuring that the work adheres to both historical accuracy and modern standards for safety and structural integrity. \nBy examining the process\, participants will gain insights into contemporary architectural practice\, including strategies for enhancing fire resilience\, maintaining material sustainability\, and ensuring the structural integrity of complex\, historic buildings.
