The film explores their innovative work in low-carbon building materials\, including algae-based cement\, electrified manufacturing\, mass timber\, and greener steel. \nThis event is free to attend and open to members of all AIA sections as well as the public. Non-AIA members who sign in will receive a certificate upon request. \nExperience a behind-the-scenes look at the Portland International Airport Main Terminal expansion\, the largest mass timber structure ever undertaken. Proven expertise in sustainability policy/strategy to generate scalable solutions for net zero carbon developments and businesses. She plays a central role in transforming the building industry’s response to climate change. She adopts a forward-thinking and holistic system approach to her projects that integrates well-being\, environmental design\, and the latest material and building technologies. Over the past two decades\, Yasemin has led the design and implementation of projects that exemplify this approach in a range of scales and geographies\, from net zero energy\, carbon neutral buildings to innovation projects developed for UN Climate Change Conferences. Among her most notable works is Urban Sequoia\, a radical proposal for a carbon-sequestering high-rise\, as well as Charenton-Bercy\, Paris’s first net-zero-carbon district; the United States Census Bureau Headquarters in Maryland; the JTI headquarters in Geneva; and Karlatornet in Gothenburg—the tallest near zero energy tower in Scandinavia. Yasemin founded and leads SOM’s firm wide Climate Action Group\, which focuses on decarbonization of the firm’s projects and business. She co-led the firm’s efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions in its operations in 2022 following SBTi methodology. As an expert in sustainability\, she co-chairs AIA’s Committee on the Environment in New York. She is a board member of Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization\, founding board member of MEP2040\, serves on AIA New York’s Honors Committee and Carbon Leadership Forum NY Steering Committee. She regularly participates in advisory boards shaping carbon and energy policies across New York and nationally.

Since its inception 100+ years ago\, the goal remains literacy in its many forms. The New York Public Library system has over 38 Carnegie branch libraries that are over 100 years old. They are in a state of disrepair\, lack infrastructure\, and are programmatically out of date. Still\, each of them is a critical part of their neighborhood. NYPL has chosen to commit to saving these historic buildings and has established standards for transformation and reuse. Two branches located in the Bronx will be presented as case studies to demonstrate the commitment and process required to achieve successful outcomes. The enduring role of libraries in today’s world will be the foundation of the conversation. She carefully considers the context in her work\, balancing preservation and modernization to generate sustainable transformations that capture the complexity of a space’s history and future goals. \nHer work at Mitchell Giurgola includes projects for the New York Public Library\, the Brooklyn Public Library\, Barnard College\, Rockefeller University\, New York University\, Cornell University\, LaGuardia Community College\, and the New York State Unified Court System. \nShe serves as a Board member of the AIA Center for Architecture\, the IDC Foundation\, and is the Vice Chair for New Yorkers for Parks. Carol was elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 2013 and President of AIA New York in 2016. She was awarded the AIA New York State President’s Award in 2019. They will also examine how traditional craftsmanship and innovative solutions are being used to rebuild Notre-Dame with both historical accuracy and modern safety standards. \nDinner + cash bar \nCourse Description (1 LU|HSW) \nIn this joint lecture\, Dr. Lindsay Cook (Department of Art History\, Penn State University) and Jackson DuBois (Executive Director\, Timber Framers Guild) will frame the Notre-Dame restoration as a work of contemporary architecture. \nThe fire that ravaged Notre-Dame in April 2019 exposed key challenges related to fire protection\, materials\, and structural integrity in historic buildings. As flames consumed the cathedral’s roof\, melting lead tiles and destroying the 19th-century spire’s timber framework\, the fire also highlighted the resilience of its stone structure. This resilience showcased the ingenuity of the original Gothic design and the craftsmanship of its builders. \nIn the wake of the fire\, the Macron administration expressed openness to adding a “contemporary architectural gesture” to the spire\, sparking an international design response. Architects and students worldwide reimagined the spire and roof system\, pushing for innovative solutions. \nHowever\, the restoration has focused on rebuilding Notre-Dame identically (à l’identique)\, a feat made possible by the combined efforts of architects\, engineers\, conservators\, materials scientists\, and tradespeople. Modern technologies have been integrated with traditional materials\, ensuring that the work adheres to both historical accuracy and modern standards for safety and structural integrity. \nBy examining the process\, participants will gain insights into contemporary architectural practice\, including strategies for enhancing fire resilience\, maintaining material sustainability\, and ensuring the structural integrity of complex\, historic buildings.

Spatial computing merges digital and physical worlds\, extending the boundaries of computing beyond screens\, and enabling users to interact with digital information and objects as if they exist in the real world. These technologies are poised to be particularly transformative in architecture and planning\, opening up new avenues to move beyond traditional 2D drawings and static 3D models and design and experience spaces in fully immersive\, interactive environments. \nAugmented Reality (AR)\,\, allows practitioners to walk through and modify designs in real-time\, communicating a more intuitive understanding of scale\, proportion\, and spatial relationships. It is also timely – with the majority of new development now taking place within existing areas\, architects must navigate complex social landscapes\, address community concerns\, and reimagine existing fabrics. AR can function as a compelling visual language\, enabling stakeholders to “inhabit” proposed spaces before construction begins. AR can bridge the gap between abstract plans and tangible realities\, making a design more accessible to clients\, stakeholders\, and community members alike. \nIn this session with Dana Chermesh-Reshef\, CEO and Founder of inCitu – the first augmented reality platform for architects\, builders\, and developers – we will explore the potential impact of AR in architecture and planning\, and provide guidance on how to integrate this technology into existing architecture and design workflows.
