SUMMARY:ALNNJ June Meeting and Scholarship Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: 2 minutesJoin us at the Bergen County Rowing Center on June 18\, 2025\, from 6 – 9 PM for the ALNNJ Scholarship Presentation Dinner. \nArchitects League of Northern New Jersey will present scholarships to student awardees from Bergen\, Hudson\, Passaic\, and Sussex Counties who will be attending NAAB-accredited architecture schools this fall\, reflecting the League’s commitment to future architects. \nThe main presentation will feature James Giresi\, AIA\, Senior Associate\, Clarke Caton Hintz who will give a talk on the design and development of the Bergen County Rowing Center\, including how the team addressed complex site and programmatic challenges to deliver a flood-resilient\, community-focused structure. With elevated decks overlooking the Passaic River and a design that embraces both athletic and public use\, the Rowing Center is a strong example of civic architecture shaped by its environment. \nALNNJ will also take a moment to recognize and thank our new and recent League members for being part of our community! \nAgenda \n6 -7 PM: Social Hour\n7 PM: Dinner followed by presentations \nScholarship Awards Presentation \nEach year\, the Architects League of Northern New Jersey proudly awards scholarships to deserving students who are pursuing a career in architecture. The program is open to current high school and college students from Bergen\, Hudson\, Passaic\, and Sussex Counties who will be attending a NAAB-accredited architecture school in the fall. \nAs part of the evening’s program\, we will recognize and celebrate this year’s scholarship recipients. This annual initiative reflects the League’s commitment to supporting the next generation of architects and is made possible through proceeds from our fundraising events and the generous contributions of our annual sponsors \nCourse: Strategies for Active and Passive Floodproofing When Building in a Floodplain (1 LU|HSW Submitted) \nThis lecture will feature the award-winning Bergen County Rowing Center\, designed by Clarke Caton Hintz. James Giresi\, AIA\, will specifically highlight the challenges of designing and constructing a permanent structure in a floodplain. The case study will illustrate the unique difficulties involved in specifying passive and active floodproofing strategies\, as well as the impact these strategies have on the building’s structural design\, material durability\, and finish selections. Additional discussion will focus on long-term performance of flood mitigation systems in unpredictable environments. \nSpeaker \nJames Giresi\, AIA is a Senior Associate at Clarke Caton Hintz in Trenton\, NJ. His passion for the built environment and the design process is reflected in his versatile experience\, which spans from small-scale building repairs to complex historic restorations and large urban planning projects. James brings technical precision\, a focus on efficiency\, and expertise in BIM to every project. Throughout his career\, he has played a key role in preserving historic landmarks\, balancing the preservation of a building’s original character with its adaptation to modern needs. His philosophy emphasizes that historic structures should evolve to serve the past\, present\, and future. \nOne of James’ most notable recent projects was the restoration of Belle Vista (Lambert Castle) in Paterson\, a Gilded Age mansion that had fallen into disrepair. Through meticulous research and careful attention to detail\, James and his team restored the mansion to its former grandeur\, receiving acclaim for their work on restoring period-specific elements such as ornate moldings\, stained glass\, and plasterwork. \nIn addition to his architectural work\, James is a Board Member of Preservation New Jersey and an advocate for preservation across the state. He is also an experienced grant writer\, helping clients secure funding and raise awareness for endangered historical sites.

SUMMARY:How Should Construction Contract Approach Potential Tariffs?
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: 2 minutesJoin AIA Tristate for an engaging conversation with construction attorneys and architects about how to safeguard your projects\, firm and clients against economic challenges. We’ll delve into standard contract clauses\, common law protections\, contract negotiations and project controls in a volatile environment. Our panel will offer diverse prospectives on the challenges and solutions in these areas. Tune in to discover best practices for navigating in today’s economically challenging built environments. \nTariffs are taxes levied on goods imported into the U.S.\, usually paid by the importer at the port of entry. These tariffs increase the costs of imported materials\, such as those used in construction\, potentially leading to higher project expenses. Standard construction contracts typically hold contractors responsible for any tax changes\, including tariffs\, without compensation for increased costs. Relief for tariffs is rarely included in force majeure or commercial impracticability clauses\, and while some federal contracts might allow for equitable adjustments under certain conditions\, this is not a certainty. Those in the role of Project and Contract Management should consider negotiating specific contract clauses to manage tariff-related risks effectively. \nPanel Members:\nTwo Attorneys from Offit Kurman are:\nJeff Bright | jeff.bright@offitkurman.com | Harrisburg\, PA Office\nMark Johnson | mark.johnson@offitkurman.com | Los Angeles\, CA Office\nMichael Spinelli\, JD\, AIA | mwspinelli@csfllc.com | Hauppauge\, NY Office | AIA NYS\nEric Booth\, AIA | ebooth@desmone.com | Pittsburgh\, PA | AIA PA\nChristopher Brand | cbrand@rscarchitects.com | | AIA NJ

SUMMARY:Generative AI in Architecture: Enhancing Health\, Safety\, and Welfare through Smarter Design 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:Reading Time: 2 minutesThe AIA New Jersey Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Committee focuses on how emerging technologies—from BIM to digital fabrication—are transforming architecture. TAP supports innovation in design and construction by helping architects explore and adopt tools that improve efficiency\, quality\, and project outcomes. Please join us for this valuable webinar: \n1 HSW \nAs architecture embraces the digital frontier\, generative AI is redefining how architects design environments that protect public health\, ensure safety\, and promote overall wellness. This webinar will explore how AI-driven tools are transforming architectural workflows to enhance building performance\, site responsiveness\, and user-centered design. \nThrough real-world case studies and applications\, attendees will examine how generative AI enables rapid iteration and design customization—allowing professionals to test multiple outcomes that support healthier environments\, safer building practices\, and more equitable community planning. By leveraging AI’s ability to work across various media—including 2D imagery\, 3D modeling\, point cloud data\, video\, and audio—architects gain powerful means to simulate\, analyze\, and communicate decisions that directly affect occupant wellbeing and the built environment. \nParticipants will also consider the ethical and practical implications of AI use\, including its role in improving indoor environmental quality\, optimizing site usage\, and reducing design risks. This session aims to equip professionals with the knowledge to responsibly integrate AI tools to advance HSW outcomes in practice.
